Use that and just create a separate iTunes library that is on the external hard drive. You can do this by holding alt while iTunes is starting up.

Your Mac's Specs
A super dumb and slow PC, a 9 inch screen and a crappy chair
Look I am the helper!
If you have a PC, use it.
TUrn it on and open a folder, anykind.
CLick tools and select folder options.
A window showed up and choose View.
click show hidden files and folders.
Then go to your ipod. There should be a transpaernet folder look, just fool arounf beyween those folders and find your songs. However, the song's name is mostly like this "QUNT" rename them by right click Propties the song's name should be displayed and copy these files to your external harddrive.
Simple??
