How do I set the Apple Pay default for cards?

I have four cards registered with Apple Pay. However, the one I use most is not the priority or default one. I have set the default on the Watch app on my iPhone, but it has not changed on my  Watch. Is there a way to force it to update on the  Watch?

Hi Jake

I was half way through typing out the way to do this when I suddenly recalled an Apple article which says it all in words & pictures - for all devices.

Saves my poor fingers!

Ian

EDIT: I think the point is that your iPhone and Apple Watch have to agree the default card.

Thanks, Ian. I've just signed up with two cards and had no idea how to nominate one as default. Not that I've found anyone accepting it yet, up north.

I’ve done all that, but it’s not changed on the watch. I would like to avoid re-pairing it, but I’m running out of ideas.

Hi Jake

I pretty well assumed you had done everything, given your long experience. Re-pairing iPhone and Apple Watch, however tedious, does seem almost inevitable. I guess you've already tried a hard reset of both devices? Another tiresome option would be to remove all 4 cards on your iPhone and reinstate them - with your default card as the first install.

Sorry, can't think of anything else.

Well Harry, not everyone is endowed with your money. We hear you are one of the wealthy elite living there in beautiful Nambucca Heads next to the ocean. :p

If you delete the cards from the watch, can't you just repopulate from the iPhone?

I can do that, but I've done that a couple of times and cannot figure out how to get them in the order I want. I have the proper default set on my iPhone, and I have done what Apple said to do to get the proper default on the  Watch, but that doesn't work. It looks like the  Watch presents the options in the order they were first entered on the iPhone, not on the  Watch, and not as I have selected for primary card. To get it right, it looks like I'll have to delete them all from the  Watch AND the iPhone, then put them into the iPhone until I get them in the right order, then repeat that process on the Watch. Definitely a first world problem, but that's going to be a hassle that I should not have to be subjected to. Just get the interface sorted out so that when I select the priority on the iPhone it is the priority on the  Watch, as the user manual says.

No, you are not alone. My husband still uses cash. I did finally get him to write checks when he purchased things for the farm since he could never remember to hand me the receipts. He also writes checks and mails in his bills and complains about the cost of stamps. ;D

Ok, so to get the default recognized as default I had to unpair and re-pair the watch, restoring from a backup. I had deleted the cards on my iPhone, but they didn't delete from the  Watch, so the re-pairing got that sorted and the cards were now missing totally. Then I added them back in the order I wanted and now it seems to be OK. PITA, plus it started another problem that I'm opening a new thread about.
