I don't stream but, although I download TV programmes to my iMac; so I don't think Apple TV will be useful for me. If I buy a smart TV are there any makes that are compatible with Apple?

If you have media on a Mac and also have an Apple TV, you can used AirPlay to play the media. However, all of these things require Apple devices. AirPlay is not a generic thing that you can stream to. A Smart TV might have other streaming mechanisms that might work.

Since posting I have done further research. UK residents with the requisite BBC licence, currently costing £147 pa, can download BBC programmes and keep them for 4 weeks at no cost. I can use the BBC iPlayer to save them to my Apple devices. It seems that the only way to do this with a 'smart' TV is to download to an external hard drive connected to the TV's usb port. As I understand it I can only stream within the law by being a subscriber to a streaming service.
