Streaming YouTube videos from an iPad to a wireless projector with Apple TV??

I had a teacher friend ask me how she could stream YouTube videos from her iPad to a wireless projector in her classroom. Evidently she can connect to the projector with her iPad. But when she tries to access the internet with the iPad, it is not connected.

My thinking is she needs to get Apple TV and use it to stream the videos from the iPad to the projector.

I do not know the brand of projector which might not be compatible with Apple TV but is it even doable?

Also any other ideas as to how she could accomplish it?

For some reason I am thinking that the Apple TV solution would not work in that situation without using a wireless router. I don't think it will stream from an iPad to a projector if you are essentially doing peer to peer networking. I'm not sure about that though.

One thing did occur to me although it involves connecting by wire. I am sending video from my iPhone to an interactive whiteboard by using apples lightning to HDMI connector and then connecting to the board. I have to use a third-party device in between because the whiteboard does not have HDMI connections. If she doesn't line using the wire, it should be possible to use the Apple lightning to HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable to connect to the projector. I believe there is also a lightning to VGA connector if that is the only option that the projector has for connections.

I'll see if I can pin down that info about the Apple TV in a peer-to-peer networking situation.

Thanks Sly, I think she wants this to be all wireless. The iPad is getting its IP addresses from the wireless network in the school. I "assume" she is using a connection app to connect to the projector which probably has a static IP?

I had a similar setup in my classroom but I used a laptop and did not need internet content. If I did I used the desktop and a wired connection.

Anything you find will help. She did mention a router but I am not sure in what context. There is no IT support at the school.

Just FYI - my friend who is a school district IT says it can be done with AppleTV. You connect it to the projector's hdmi and use airplay to send the video from the ipad to the projector. I will let you know if we try it.

Thanks for the follow-up. That's good to know. I don't know where I saw that information and it's entirely possible that I misunderstood it.

If the iPad is on the school network, and the projector has an IP address on the same network, that should simplify things a bit. If your friend can convince the powers that be to put the Apple TV on the same network I can't think of a reason that you wouldn't be good to go.

Well we shall see. There does not seem to be a "powers that be" persons. No IT support and if it is like other privates schools I have been in, they hire out the networking and don't do any maintenance until it fails.

We shall see how it works if my girlfriend can get it working or setup.

The iPad and the AppleTV will need to be on the same network.

The connection to the projector, as already mentioned, is via HDMI.
HDMI, amongst other things, includes copy protection but for playing YouTube videos should be OK. Content that is copy protected may not work due to different HDMI standards (more correctly, due to HDCP standards but that is a whole new can of worms.)

Once the connection to the projector is made, simply mirror the iPad display to the AppleTV and you should be good to go.
