1. Does it work on any wireless configuration or does it have to be airport?

2. Looks like we might see something new in the future as far as iPhone/Ipad. ANy rumours about a new Apple TV coming out?(just would hate to buy it and something new comes out in a month:)

I have an Apple TV2 and really enjoy it.
On your 1st question - yes it does work on any wireless router and it does not have to be an Airpot.

I am not sure when the next Apple TV will be out but given the low price of $99 (US) I would suggest that you if want one then buy it and enjoy it now.

Let me see...hmmm...where did I put my crystal ball.

You tell me where the price of Apple Stock will be in 6-12 months...and I'll tell you when a new Apple TV will be coming out!;)

I'm also thinking of getting apple TV and getting rid of sky movies.

We have an internet speed of 3.5mbps, is this fast enough. How long will we have to start the stream/download before starting to watch if it buffers at this speed?

Best intel is no new ATV in 2011 so I think you're safe from that standpoint. Apple will do a major software upgrade when iOS5 is released. But no indications of new hardware, at least according to some posts on the Rumors forum.

I just got my ATV2 over the weekend and it works great over my wireless system. A little pricey for TV show downloads from Apple but works great, as is the video quality. Downloads are pretty snappy too - waited just a minute or so to start although we have pretty fast internet.

Apple TV has not made the company much money so there is no big rush to come out with a new one. I love my apple tv. I got ride of my cable boxes and I get them almost free because I work for an ISP. The apple TV saves on power big time. My bill already went down. I know its a gimmick feature, but i love that i can control the apple tv from my iphone. Mostly we use netflix at my house. The netflix GUI on the apple tv is better then the playstation3 and the xbox360. My wife seems to really enjoy going through the new movies that are coming out at the theater on it. For 100 bucks you are turning your computer into a media server and saving power, you can't go wrong, I think a lot of people don't get that.

When all the other Apple products are running an A5 chip(speculated but not confirmed on iPhone5), don't you think it would make sense for the Apple TV to be upgraded to using this same type of chip in the ATV3? Also for the upgrade, ATV competitors can play 1080p, so doesn't ATV need to be able to play it too?

Something weird is going on with not being able to rent TV shows anymore. That doesn't make sense to me, but perhaps I'm missing something.

ATM No. Im happy with what ATV2 does for me

Again No. It doesn't NEED to but would be nice sometime in the future. Apple will have their reason, and didn't Jobs say once "the ATV is more of a hobby" for Apple ??

I agree that it makes sense that Apple will upgrade ATV along with iPhone 5 & 5th gen. iPod touch. If Apple does not upgrade the ATV with the A5 chip and enable 1080 they should give up on the set-top box market. Just about all of the competitors have 1080p, it would only be a small improvement but at least it would show they have some interest in the device.

I think renting tv shows was an experiment that didn't payoff. It probably had to do with networks not shows much support for tv show rentals and low interest from consumers.

You're looking at it wrong... It's about cost and benefit. If they are still producing the A4 chip (which they will be for the cheap iPhone 4 @ $99) then they don't "NEED" to upgrade at all. The A5 chip costs more to produce and the Apple TV may not need it's capabilities. At that point, slapping the chip in there makes no sense at all. It costs them more, and Apple doesn't go on messing with the profit margin.
1080p makes sense, but again, they may not feel the need to do it. Higher resolution means more data when streaming. That bogs down performance on slow networks, and in areas where the high speed Internet sucks. This means that Apples "it just works" might not just work at all. If 1080 resolution is the only thing keeping $99 in your pocket, you probably shouldn't be buying the Apple TV when it does have full HD.
They shouldn't "give up on the market" any more than they should have given up on the desktop computer market when the Cube failed. For me the Apple TV is exactly what I need. A $99 dollar box that puts Netflix and all of my digital media on any TV in my home. It's cheap enough that I have three of them. Living room, bedroom, den. All able to pull up my library of movies with a couple of clicks on a simple remote or even my iPhone, none of them with a hard line to the computer in the office.

I think renting tv shows was an experiment that didn't payoff. It probably had to do with networks not shows much support for tv show rentals and low interest from consumers.
Renting was an experiment that showed them where the real money was in digital video: Subscriptions... Why get me for a buck to watch Ancient Aliens once, when I will happily give you ten bucks every month to have access to it and a whole bunch of other things at any time. It would be great if they could just snap up an existing service and roll it into iOS, but it may be a while before they can get the licensing and software up and running from scratch.
