I hope those iDevice updates come with some battery life improvements. Both my iPhone and iPad have been draining like crazy on iOS 13.3 in particular.

Everyone:

Please make sure you backup before installing any of these updates.

Backup procedure is a bit different for iOS and iPadOS if you're running Catalina. Backup is accomplished from the Finder by clicking on your device and selecting "backup to this computer".

LIAB, I haven't seen any battery problem, but I have the brightness set to be not so bright, and I am mostly on WiFi, which, I think saves some battery time.

I agree, Jake & LIAB.

It's remarkable how easy it is to adjust to a much reduced brightness level. In what you might call an "average" light background, try reducing the brightness level down to about one third, and keep the automatic brightness control on.

It is recognised the screen illumination is one of the major battery eaters.

Definitely not our issues here (my wife is having problems also). I actually am not on my phone very much these days, especially on my work days, but sitting idle it drains far more than it should be, at work and at home when I'm on wifi. My iPad is really bad and goes from a full charge to fully drained just sitting idle in about 24 hours, maybe 30 or so. Now much of that one's problem is the age (iPad Air 2 about 5 years old now), but the current state has been a dramatic change very recently. My settings (iPhone and iPad) are fairly aggressive at prioritizing battery life, and I've done the usual troubleshooting steps. We'll see how this update works out.

Just for some perspective on the iPad in particular... I just checked it. It was fully charged this morning @ 6:30a and has been idle with the smart cover closed over the screen so it's been asleep till now. Battery is now @ 77%. Sooo... no luck with the update it seems. Eh, regardless of what happens, a new iPad is in my future. I'm just holding out for the next release of the Pros.

Some more stats on the sorry state of battery life on my XR with iOS 13. At 5p, my charge was around 99%. I spent a few minutes looking over some settings but other than a few apps that I adjusted notifications for, everything was pretty tight. The iPhone has sat unused since with all apps forcibly quit. It’s now 1045p and the battery charge is at 74%. That’s simply insane. I think I’ll try wiping it this weekend and restoring from backup. That’s the only thing I’ve yet to try.

So, I did complete wipes and restores of both my devices today and have some early and interesting impressions. My iPhone XR is still draining unreasonably fast despite sitting idle and unused for 2 hours now. But my iPad? Was at 99% charge after idle and used for 2 hours, shot immediately back to 100% when I plugged it in. Based on recent experiences, I would have expected it to be around 88%. Now, the only other change I made besides restoring it was completely disabling bluetooth (from Settings app, not Control Center) since I don’t have it paired to anything. Considering how poorly my iPhone is still doing, I’m betting this has something to do with bluetooth. I will do more experimenting and report back. I am curious for those of you who are not having battery drain issues, do you have bluetooth disabled, or is it enabled but maybe you have AirDrop disabled?

I have an iPhone 8 not an XR so my battery experience may not be the same as yours. I do have BT and AirDrop enabled. I can charge the phone to 100% around 6 PM and leave it on standby all night and in the morning it still shows 100%. It does drain during the day even on standby but usually only around 10 to 15% at the most.

An iPhone 8 screen is LCD which might be the difference from yours.

I have an 11, leave BT enabled (and in use) all the time, don't see big battery declines. Also didn't see it on the previous XS I had. But again, I keep the screen brightness at about 1/3 of possible, use WiFi for calls because my cell signal in my house is rubbish. When a cell phone is seeking a tower to work with, it uses a tremendous amount of power in that search. My provider, Verizon, supports VOIP over WiFi, so by using that, I stopped the constant searching for a tower with at least one bar (there aren't any).

Screen brightness is absolutely 100% not a factor here, nor is the type of screen. The battery is draining unrealistically while locked; the screen is off; all apps removed from the Switcher; and the devices in a bag unused and not connected to anything by BT. At home, neither wifi nor cellular strength are issues. The iPad is wifi only anyway. At work, cellular is spotty so that may be a variable there for my iPhone and only my iPhone.

I’ve recharged my iPhone back to 100%; disabled bluetooth; and put it away. I’ll re-check it in a couple hours and see what the charge level is. If it’s draining still like it has been, it should be low 90s and at that point I can then target cellular for testing (I’m at work for the night).

You can also do an experiment with Airplane mode to see if it drops. If it does, it is something other than cell or wifi or bt. If it doesn't turn on cell/wifi/bt one at a time to see which trigger the drop. You can have one or more still working in Airplane mode by turning them back on individually (at least WiFi and BT, which lets you isolate Cell as well).

Good point. I’ll give that a whirl if the battery continues to drain with just BT off for now. I have all night to experiment, but given how dramatic the difference was with the iPad, I’m confident I’m on track. It may be AirPlay, or heck maybe just toggling BT off and back on will be enough.

Welp, we’re coming up on the 2 1/2 hour mark and the charge level on the XR is..... still 100%. So we can stick a fork in this one... the battery drain absolutely is related to bluetooth somehow. Turning that back on now and disabling AirDrop to see if I can refine the problem down some.

I took screen caps of the battery usage stats for reference later to see what, if anything, changes. The XR will sit unused until I reassess in a couple hours.

Well this was painful. After an hour and a half, the battery was already down to 95% while left idle as before. I decided to follow a tip from an article I read and reset all settings. It took me a good 45 minutes to re-do everything to my liking, then charge back to 100% but it’s been idling for an hour since and is still at 100%. I do believe the problem is solved. *phew*

Final update... we can officially stick a fork in it. "Reset all Settings" did the trick on both devices. The iPad in particular has been sitting idle with the screen locked and covered since 6:30 this morning and bluetooth re-enabled with all my settings manually re-enabled after the master reset (what a chore that was!). It has been 10 hours now and has gone from 100% charge to 97%. Compare that to my earlier post where I mentioned that it went from 100% to 77% in 7 hours while sitting idle similarly. I'm very satisfied with that, especially given the age of the battery. The XR is also holding up much much better.

It's just incredible that this is what it took to restore normal battery life. I normally would have expected a full wipe and restore to have done the trick. But in thinking about it, this is more the equivalent of nuking your user Library in macOS and letting the OS rebuild it from scratch, which I've done long ago in the past to resolve problematic behavior. Heck, I effectively had to do that by clean installing Catalina and manually cherry pick/copy all my user data over when an upgrade install didn't cut it.

I dont think there is much content in these updates other than security and a couple of things which dont apply to my devices e.g.
The macOS Catalina 10.15.3 update improves the stability, reliability, and security of your Mac, and is recommended for all users.

  • Optimizes gamma handling of low gray levels on Pro Display XDR for SDR workflows when using macOS
  • Improves multi-stream video editing performance for HEVC and H.264-encoded 4K video on the MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)
As for the iOS/iPadOS they have a bit more content especially on the iPhone but none of them appear to be related to battery issues. Check the "About this update" option before you update to get the details on the nine listed issues resolved and the five listed issues for iPAD.

My iPhone SE does drain quite fast; this has got worse since I bought a Series 1 iWatch. I like the size of the SE. Are any of the newer models the same size as an SE?
