The Wall Street Journal reported about 30 minutes ago that Jony Ive is leaving Apple to form a design company, with Apple as the first and prime customer. There were other changes as well.

Interesting development. Wonder if this is a way to defuse the "break up big tech" push going on?

I would be much happier if there had been a complete separation between Ive and Apple and Apple got in some new design blood.

And it should have happened years ago.

I don't know about "years ago", but I do have to agree that "form over function" has been a growing problem that can arguably be pinned on him. The trashcan Mac Pro; the keyboards on the new MacBooks; etc. So yes, time for some new blood. I don't know how involved his new business will really be with Apple. Heck, it just may be a superficial face-saving move to keep investors calm.

Too many...
I'm glad he's out. His design ideas were long in the tooth a while ago. Excited for the new designs to come!

Headline says "plunges" but the numbers say 1%. Is 1% a "plunge?"

In any event, later articles say that Ive's involvement for the last couple of years has been trending down, and down significantly. One report was that he only came to the Apple campus 1 or 2 days a week, sometimes less. Is there going to be some change? Sure, maybe for good, maybe not. We'll see. I don't hold any animus for Ive, his designs are certainly minimalist, to an extreme sometime, but he certainly set the standard for how mobile phones and laptops should look and feel. As long as we don't go back to the beige box and folding phone approach, I think somehow we'll all survive the change.

Take note that the word "Plunges" has since been removed from the URL's subject I posted earlier.

It has been tamed down and now reads:
Following News That Jony Ive Is Leaving, Apple Stock Loses Billions

I guess some Editor figured the original title was a little bit much on the extreme side. :Smirk:

+1.
Otherwise Tim Cook could or should be the next one to go.

That's just what we need, another period of chaos at Apple. Anyone here remember when Jobs left and the Pepsi Cola guy took over? How well did Apple do then? It was so bad that Microsoft had to step in and help. :holdon

So let's not be so quick to condemn Tim Cook or Jony Ive. :wink

Agreed 100% Charlie. I remember when Scully from Pepsi came aboard and messed everything up. It took Jobs coming back to fix it all. This time Jobs can not come save it so we need to be careful.

It looks like Ives is leaving so I hope that works out. I read somewhere he will still be helping apple from his new company.
