Hey...
Good to hear from you again. Been too long.
Yeah, I kind of agree with you. Although we have been told that Apple is working on a new Mac Pro for release sometime in 2019, for now it's just a "Pie in the Sky". I was not impressed with the iMac Pro as an intermediate replacement for a new Mac Pro since nothing in it is user replaceable and Apple has locked it down to the point where only their specialists can work on it.
Looking around on other forums (MacRumors) I read of many folks who are of the same opinion as you and have in fact switched platforms. I would hate to see you have to go back to Windows.
Regards,
Charlie
Hey!! Although I don't post as much as I used to, I still lurk through MF via the website or Facebook posts. I've read a fare share of negative stories regarding iMac Pros. To me, throwing the Pro insignia on one does not mean it can overtake any pro user's desktop throne, especially when you can barely get it open to service it.
I have noticed 1 HUGE issue with the Mac Pros, and this relates to ALL Apple computers: Thunderbolt! The issue is that it's not reliable with power users. With average users, like those that don't use the thunderbolt connection for more than 1 or 2 external items inconsistently, the issue will probably never be noticed. However, with heavy users like myself, where I have many peripherals connected at once running all the time, you realize thunderbolt is not designed to run a connected peripheral 24/7. My MP5.1 can handle these effortlessly, but not my 6.1, even though Apple says otherwise. This is detrimental to external drives. I run 5 arrays of external drives, and I do not trust my Mac Pro 6.1 to handle and manage the connection on its own- the way it should be like on my Mac Pro 5.1. I don't know how to emphasize how great of an issue this is for me. It's the single reason why I have kept my MP5.1. For heavy, "pro" users, thunderbolt is a gimmick intended to be used as simple all-in-one plugin. It's not even reliable for handling more than 3 monitors. I have to use 4 monitors, and on my 6.1, it will disconnect a monitor every now and then. When this happens, it reshuffles the monitor layout. It's so frustrating. And there's no way around it. The amount of frustrated Mac Pro 6.1 users on the Apple community is crazy!
I have honestly contemplated on buying a cheap 12-core Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 and swapping out the processors if the next Mac Pro doesn't go back to real pro user connections.
I'm just really frustrated because this isn't a personal computer issue, this is something I actually need, but I feel cornered because I HATE Windows 10 with every atom in my body!!!
I feel your pain. I have a Mac Pro 5,1 and I refuse to buy the 2013 MP trash can. I just can't spend that kind of money on a machine with so little upgrade options and no expansion room. The iMac Pro is a joke for the true pro - IMO. I like as much screen real estate as possible which means at least two 27" monitors. I can only hope Apple gets serious and offers up a true pro machine in 2019.
I have a Windows machine that I also use for video editing. It is getting close to the time to replace it as I build it on a Tyan server board in 2008. While it still runs fine there have been some significant upgrades since I built it. What Apple does may determine what I do. And yes, I need two machines that can edit videos.

I didn't even upgrade my 6.1 to the highest core spec, but the speed rating and real experience with performance so far WAY exceed the 5.1, even with the slight drop in processor speed. The 6.1 obviously has its benefits over the 5.1, but it also has its shortcomings. And shortcoming is something that shouldn't even be discussed with a Mac Pro. It should be a straight save of a system. But Apple is stuck on a minimalist design and connection/expansion mentality right now. I wish someone would hit them all over the head with a 2x4!
