Apple just unveiled new updates to the Macbook Pro. They are now get a newer generation CPU and for those that need it up to 32GB of memory. This was a sore point for a lot of people when the newest MBP was announced and looks be addressed.

The reason for the 16GB limit before was stated to be a battery life thing. But now this new MBP can go up to 32GB of memory and still has a claimed 10hrs.

Awesome, I will be needing to upgrade my laptop before too long and while I don't know that I would need that much RAM it is good to see Apple starting to pay a bit more attention to the Mac.

I went to my local apple store today with a friend who took his iPhone X in for repair - they are sending it off and it will be two weeks! Anyway, one of the apple people told me they had just gotten a shipment of the new Macbook Pros in. I offered to help unpack them but sadly they said no thanks. :Smirk:

I think it is about time they actually are making a Macbook deserving of the Pro designation. I have a 2017 MB Pro and while I really like it and it is perfect for what I bought it for, I do not make the mistake of thinking I will be doing large video projects or editing RAW photos on it. Some small projects are doable but I don't view it as a heavy duty work horse. Now these new models show considerable promise for those who want portability and computing power.

That as well as even just updating them in general at this point, before these MBPs the lineup had gotten pretty stagnant across all models.

I have a MBP that I recently bought and I was unhappy about only being able to get 16GB of RAM in it. I have found that I need more than that in my Mini from time to time, especially when processing large digital photos, and was wondering when and if Apple would increase the amount of RAM that was available. I am glad to hear that they are doing so, but it would have been nice had they done that before I bought ... :Smirk:

Which MacBook Pro do you have? Soem of them are very easy to upgrade and some aren't. I beleive there are also some models that cannot be upgraded.

Maybe you're not using the correct Mac model for the work you might want to do. Especially "when processing large digital photos…".

And maybe you might be interested in this article, even if it is three years old:

I'm thinking that Apple's current thinking is that they'll rely on the speed of the SSDs when it needs that occasional extra shot of "memory".
If it's continually needed, then maybe one should buy a RAM loaded desktop Mac???

I'd suspect that might increase some sales as well eh??? :Smirk:

I was a bit surprised that only the 15" MBPros can take a maximum of 32GB memory. I guess Jony and his designer buddies made them too thin to accept more in the remaining available space.

But 16GB DDR4 memory modules certainly do exist and don't seem to be that much larger.

But I don't know the real reason(s) why the RAM is limited.

I bought it for my wife, trying to wean her away from Windows, which she dislikes, but she has not even picked it up months after I bought it. I have been thinking that perhaps I should just use it instead.

I really don't have all that much choice in what Mac I use.

My eyes are sensitive to glare and glossy screens give me headaches and eye strain, so I have to use an external monitor. Given that, the two iMac models which I wanted to get were just not practical. If I can not use the iMacs and want a desktop I am left with the choice of a Mini or a Pro. Or Windows, of course ...

When I went through this last time I almost opted for the Pro but the price was just too high to me to justify the cost, so I ended up with the Mini. It is a fairly highly "spec-ed" Mini as those things go, but it is only a 2 core i7 and I could use more processing power. Dxo's PhotoLab takes about 20 seconds to process a single raw image to jpg, and doing any serious work in Photoshop can be time consuming. And even doing limited photo work I sometimes find that my free RAM is down below 2GB.

I do wonder if the Mini could actually support 32GB if I could find a way to install it, and my ssd is only 256GB so I have to keep an extra usb3 external ssd to give me enough space for photos.

We just got back from our latest trip yesterday and I finally had some time to sit down and read the article you posted. It was very interesting and what I found surprising was that the author's thoughts pretty much paralleled my own, even to being uncomfortable with glossy screens. In the end he came to the conclusion that the Mac Pro was best for him, which I found interesting. I seriously considered the Mac Pro 3 years ago when I bought my Mini, but decided to go with the Mini, mostly based on price. I suspect that if I had bought the Pro I would not now be looking around for a new machine so perhaps my price consideration was misplaced.

The problem is that the technology in the Pro is now 5 years old and I am unsure if it is wise to spend that much money (even a refurbished Pro is expensive) on such old technology. My current Mini is still under Apple Care for another couple of months, so I can wait until that expires and then see. However I do want to be able to upgrade to 32GB of RAM so that is going to limit my choices.

Thank you for the link to the article.

Don't forget that the later macOS versions tend to handle memory differently if that happens to apply to your situation.

Just a thought in case any of it applies.

Not only limit your choices, but also more expensive. Macs that can accept 32GB of memory can exceed $3000.00 and perhaps more. I would recommend a top of the line iMac for you but I know you have a problem with display glare. The new iMacs with retina screen are hard on the eyes. I have my screen brightness turned down as much as possible and still be able to view things and the brightness is still too much for me.

I had looked for a non-gloss matte screen cover to use to remove the gloss from the iMac but could not find anything in the 27" size that was not a privacy screen. I thought I could live with the iMac if I used it as a secondary display since I already have a 32" BenQ monitor that I use as my main display but without being able to de-gloss the screen I worry about what it will do to my eyes.

I assume pm-r is referring to what I believe is a different garbage collection mechanism, but I am not sure.

Would not any of the iMac display anti-glare covers and/or any third party Brightness Controls work to help that situation??

Just a curious comment suggestion …

Not really, but topics like how much do you need for what you do and how the software uses it.

IE:
You probably don't need 32GB of memory for your new MacBook Pro.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct...-macbook-pro&usg=AOvVaw3D1YKbPDkI_vL051N_mF6F

do Macs need 32GB memory
https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=do+Macs+need+32GB+memory&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

etc.

I do not want to be answering for chscag but I have to ask if you have a link to any anti-glare covers for the 27" iMacs as I could not find any that were really anti-glare. All I found was privacy and I do not need any of those.
