We've had a rash of reported incidents where folks who were using Ethernet find that it no longer works.

Interesting. Had to use Ethernet to set up 2.4GHz channel for my new Epson printer and nothing went haywire.

I also have installed the update and used my ethernet connection (with WiFi off) to change a router setting yesterday and it worked perfectly.

I had my ethernet quit on me, thought it was something gone wacky so I reinstalled El Cap and it came back. I guess the reinstall fixed whatever the security update broke.

Here's a link to Apple's description of the problem. It describes how to identify whether you have the problem files and confirms that reinstall seems to fix the problem. If you're comfortable with Terminal commands that's an option.
