If you think your iTunes Store account has been hacked, do the following:

Have your bank block all iTunes purchases, and if needed, change your password, or- remove your credit card off the iTunes Store account information for your account:

1) Launch iTunes.

2) In iTunes, go to "Store" in the menu bar (in Mac OS X) or in the menu bar at the top of the window (in Windows) and click on "View My Account".

3) Click on "Edit Payment Information"
4) Click on "None" next to the list of credit card options at the top.
5) Save your information. It may/may not prompt you to select the county in your state (or otherwise) from which you are billed to at times.

Use iTunes Gift Cards if you feel as paranoid as I do.

iTunes App Store hit by developer and account fraud
AppleInsider | iTunes App Store hit by developer and account fraud
Apple's iTunes Store users are increasingly being targeted in a number of fraud cases, some of which appear to be orchestrated by iOS app developers seeking to boost their sales rankings, and others which appear to be a widespread hack of user accounts.

I had noticed a couple of weeks after the iPad came out while I was browsing the books section about 30 out of the top 50 were all these anime foreign language books. Was wondering who was buying these things to put them in the top 50.

I noticed on Saturday a few charges to my card that I did not authorize... to the tune of $1,400...

I know they say no refunds haha, but they better!

The best part is I called my bank at 8am on Saturday, told them there was, at the time, just under $200 worth of charges. They said they would freeze the account and launch an investigation. 11am rolls around and another $1,200 is taken out... I guess they didn't get freeze if after all. Oh well, at least I can't get hit with anymore since I have no more money.

Good way to avoid this mess:

Get a PayPal Debit
Never keep more than $100 in it.
Use it for iTunes etc.

Just checked my bank account and iTunes purchase history and fortunately, my account was not hacked.

Doesn't mean they can't overcharge (or whatever the term is) your account.

I would use iTunes Gift cards from now on. $50 should be good enough if you're a frequent iTunes shopper.

My account wasn't hacked either..though Dad has had to cancel two credit cards in the last couple of months. But I noticed that nothing was out of place in iTunes.

I recommend always using an actual credit card rather than a debit card for online transactions. Credit card protections are much stronger than debit card protections usually and it won't immediately impact your checking account like a debit card will.

I've had awesome dispute resolution with both American Express and Discover in the past when I had some fraudulent charges.

I wouldn't use gift cards and hold a balance, because there aren't any protections that way.

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
I can see a giant class action against Apple around the corner on this one!

How so? It appears only a few hundred accounts (worldwide) have been affected, not the one million/billion (let's say every) accounts out there.

Of course, those articles out there should be taken with a grain of salt...

A few hundred that we know of so far!
Money coming out of some peoples account can mean extreme hardship, if not have irreparable results.
When all comes to light and enough people are effected, this is where things can get magnified.
This is a lot bigger than just purchasing a faulty product!
