Built in ethernet not working

I cannot get my built in ehternet to work. I have the airport working but cannot not get the ethernet working.. I diconnect the cable from one of my computers at home and plug in the ethernet cable into my mac and nothing happens. I have tried three different cables at my house and even tried at a friends house. When i connect the cable to my computer that light on the linksys does now turn on but as soon as i connect it back to another computer the liksys will turn on. What could by wrong and what should I do?

Standard Straight Through cable I take it? It should light the light on the Router/Switch.

it doesnt...no light comes on the router and under network settings for built-in ethernet is says no cable is connected...
