case sensitive file system

Im looking into purchasing some video editing software..I had taken a class in it many years ago on windows and have just learned that it is now available on Mac. I became quite good at it ad would like to continue doing this.

one of the requirement is..... will not work if device uses case-sensitive file system.
how do I determine whether my Mac does or does not?

Whoa that's totally lame, since HFS/APFS on Mac, NTFS on Windows and EXT3/EXT4 on Linux are all case-sensitive file systems.

The file system that was not case sensitive was FAT16 and boy was that a pain to use.

What sort of a silly app cares how you've named a file, they should care more about WHAT the content is.

If the app is a legacy app, it might not even work with the newer version of macOS. And honestly, if they are making those sort of requirements, you are better of looking at more up to date software and if it's the familiarity that's pushing you towards this particular app, there are countless YouTube videos on video editing that you can find on newer and well known apps.

the app is adobe prem elements and the requirement is listed for 2020 and 2019 .... so not old at all.
I MUST be misreading or misunderstanding the info.

yes it is familiarity that is pushing me to this software...mainly because I created a video file using it back in 2009 during a class I took and so had lot of guidance with it. I cannot access it now as the files are in format on readable my prem elem for windows platform.

I thought if I bought the software I could access that file... it was a lot of work and I would love to share with others.
I have in mind to make a few more but hesitant in learning iMovie as not familiar with it.

yes and I have seen many videos on youtube on video editing but that learning method is not always the best for me. tho I may have to go that way
if I can't get any satisfaction from adobe.

My apologies, looks like HFS/APFS and NTFS are able to be case-sensitive, but by default have it disabled. EXT3/EXT4 on Linux is case sensitive by default.

So, that you should be all set with Adobe Premier. But just to confirm, please open up Disk Utility and select Macintosh HD in there. If the Type there says HFS or APFS and doesn't mention case-sensitive you are all set. You can also click on the (i) info icon on the top right to get more detailed info and one of the options should read "Is case-sensitive" and if it says No, you are all set. That's what I have on my Catalina based MBP, so depending on the version of macOS you are running, you might see the same thing or something subtly different.

I will say that you have to explicitly choose to format your drive as case-sensitive, otherwise you get the case-insensitive version.

I did as you suggested. and after I clicked (i) top right screen showed a variety of info. one being "is case sensitive" NO

so this means that my Mac is not case sensitive...so should be good to go??

You're good to go Lori. Your Mac's drive is not formatted to be case sensitive.

S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) is designed by IBM.

It was created to monitor the disk status by using various methods and devices (sensors).
A single ATA hard disk may have up to 30 such measured values, which are called attributes.

SMART status was a good way to know the health of your spinning HDD and when it began to report errors, it was a good indication that the drive should be replaced soon. With the advent of SSDs, SMART is no longer applicable and there isn't a comparable thing for SSDs to know when the drive might fail.

I am so pleased...after all my concern about prem elements file. I was able to find the final video files in avi and wmv formats which I could access easily. so no need to buy prom elem. I will however, delve into learning more about iMovie which I understand is fairly easy to learn and I can again play with movie making.
