is this normal?

Hi everyone

I recently bought a new 2018 MacBook Air with Retina display. I love it

Today I bought a SanDisk 128GB USB C flash drive. Before using, I formatted it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in disk utility.

However, when plugged in it gets very hot very quickly, without even transferring anything to and from it. Anyone else experience this? Is the drive faulty?

That's not normal Nick. I would return the flash drive or exchange it for another.

I agree. Never noticed any of my flash drives getting hot, regardless of usage

If it gets hot without transferring anything to it, it's likely faulty as the others have suggested. But while transferring, you might feel it got hot but it should settle down after.

Before returning the drive, I thought I'd try using it with a USB C to USB adapter (it's one of these dual connector types so has both normal and USB C "ends"). Using it this way, there are no overheating issues at all.

So I'll probably keep it and use it as a "normal" USB flash drive and just use an adapter when I need to use it with my new MBA.
