Good Ebook reader for Macbook Pro?
I've looked everywhere for a good reader that will read Epub and txt files, but I am getting nowhere fast!
Anyone know of a free or reasonably cheap reader for the Macbook Pro please?

"Good" is something that only you can answer. You haven't told us what criteria matter to you. Start with iBooks (that is free) and allows you to sync any Ebooks across multiple devices. TXT file are not ebooks.

If you turn the txt files into PDF files, they should import into iBooks as well.

On another unmentionable OS, txt files are displayed and read by ALL good E-book readers! Perhaps I should have said reliable instead of good! I will give iBooks a try. Thanks for your help!

"Reliable" is still an ambiguous term. Reliable to one person can be different than what reliable means to a 2nd person...or a 3rd person. Really got to say specifically what parameters are important.

In any case...hopefully iBooks will be "good & reliable" for you.

Kindle has a free reader for kindle format, and once configured, you can send some files to your kindle app by email and they will convert them. Also there is an app called Calibre that has a built in reader that also does conversions of formats. It is shareware, but you can use it for free to test.

I've been avoiding anything using the Kindle format as of late. The Kindle app is still 32 bit and does not look like Amazon is doing any further development with it. It, like other 32 bit apps will not be supported in the next version of macOS.

Also, Calibre will not convert the Kindle format for some reason. I believe it's because of the way Kindle books are listed in the Kindle data base.

Charlie, my last update to Kindle was in May, 2018, which is not that long ago, given their slow changes prior to that (I seem to recall about once a year). It is still 32-bit, so you are correct that if they don't update it it won't work after the next upgrade. I don't really use the MBP version, but do read on my iPad mini all the time with it. And on the mini I get updates about once a month so it is definitely still in development there. If they do go away from macOS and iOS, I may be forced to buy an actual Kindle to read my books. As for Calibre, I haven't converted a kindle book in a while, but I do buy books online from other ebook vendors and Calibre successfully converts them to Kindle if they are not in that format already.

Calibre works and works well, just not with the Kindle format. I have a rather large collection of Kindle books, some of them which were provided free by a ministry we support. Amazon is a real stickler for copy protection. Kindle books can not be backed up and even resist being backed up by Time Machine or CCC.

If I ever find a way to convert those Kindle books to iBooks that would be great.

Charlie, just today I got an update to Kindle for Mac, and one of the updates is that it is now 64-bit compatible. So they are continuing development, and are ready for 64 bit restrictions.

And you might give the latest Calibre a try at converting those Kindle books. It claims to be able to convert both MOBI and AZW formats.

Thanks for the heads up on the Kindle update. As long as the Kindle app is 64 bit, I see no reason to convert my book collection to iBooks. Also, as I stated above, the particular ministry we support provides their works in Kindle format only.

I installed Calibre because I use it extensively on my Windows PC's, but it is not really designed to be a simple eBook reader, more of a management system! I will convert all my txt book files into Epub and use iBooks.
    Thanks for all your help!
