    old i7 vs. new i5?
Hi. My understanding of CPUs is somewhat lacking.

I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro with a 2.9GHz Core i7. Would the new MacBook Airís 1.6GHz Core i5 be an upgrade or a downgrade from that?

    Thanks for any help.

Just for clarity...there were two 2012 MacBook Pro model releases:

    - Mid-2012 models
    - Retina 2012 models

You have a "Retina 2012" MacBook Pro.

Regarding the Retina 2012 2.9 GHz MacBook Pro vs. 2018 1.6 GHz MacBook Air:

    - CPU benchmarks are one way to compare. The 2010 Retina MacBook Pro has a CPU benchmark score of 6508 vs. 7379 for the 2018 MacBook Air. So a bit of an upgrade there.
    - Then there's the difference in graphics hardware. The graphics hardware on the MacBook Air is at least 3 generations newer than the 2012 Retina MacBook Pro. This is probably the biggest difference between the two models.
    - MacBook Air is slimmer & lighter.
    - Both have a retina display.
    - 2018 MacBook Air probably has a few more newer "bells & whistles" since it's 6 years newer than the 2012 Retina MacBook Pro.

Just to add to Nick's comment, everymac.com should have a listing somewhere of the differences, but at least the specs and speed and capabilities.
