Hello,
I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro running High Sierra 10.13.6 and have noticed in the last few weeks that my laptop will get very hot immediately at start up and the fans will come on at high speed.

After a bit the machine will cool off and the fans turn off, but then it will do the same thing at unpredictable intervals.

I ran a diagnostics test and it didn't show any hardware issues.

Is there anything you might recommend in order to figure out what the problem is and how to correct it?

Im not very tech savvy, but am able to open up the laptop, remove, replace or clean certain components. Much past that Im not very able.

Thank you very much for your help and I hope to hear from you soon.

Oh, one thing I just thought of. I recently added "Amazon Photos" to my Mac and it seems to be running continually. Do you think that could be the cause of the problem?

best to you,

Rick

Open Activity Monitor from your Utility folder in Applications. Go to the CPU tab and click on the header for %CPU to sort the processes by CPU usage. It may take a couple of clicks to get the most used to the top. Then watch what is using your CPU. If you put the Activity Monitor in your startup list at System Preferences>Users & Groups> your account/Login Items and then reboot, AM will start as soon as you log in and you may be able to see what's taking up the CPU to drive the fans. I suspect just about everything from Amazon will be in constant communication with the mother ship.

Amazon Photos, may be trying to sync all of your photos to the cloud, so that could be an issue?

And did this problem start just after installing "Amazon Photos"???

If so,I would suggest you've found your problem and the cause. ;D

MacInWin Jake, ferrarr Bob and pm-r Patrick,
Thanks so much for your posts and as per usual, you folks have helped me greatly!

It is indeed Amazon Photos. It was taking up a lot of the CPU so I just simply turned it off and now all is good!

You folks are outstanding!

Most appreciated and best to you always,

Rick

That's one way to fix the problem I guess, but how many photos do you have that were possibly being migrated to your Amazon storage, and excuse my ignorance, but does it use it's own application??? I thought it was browser based.

If Amazon Photos has a "helper" app which kicks in at startup you might like to remove it from your login items.
Have a look at System Preferences>Users & Groups> your account/Login Items and see how many there are. You may even find others you don't really need to run at startup. After all you can always start them manually when needed from the app's icon.
I have 6 but it's amazing how they can build up.

Thanks Patrick and Rod. Appreciate it.

Yes, I went ahead and unchecked the "run at start up" box and now will just run it as I need to. Im not sure how the Amazon Photos app works but it was definitely turning on at start up which explains the fans coming on.

thanks again,

Rick

I think Amazon Drive, has a sync photos option, that asks for peremission during install or at first run?

It seems that the Amazon Photos.app is the desktop app to be used with their service from what I read.
