The DVD reader on my Mid 2012 13" MBP has stopped working. Is there anyway to troubleshoot it? If I insert a CD or DVD, it thrashes around in there for 20-30 seconds, then just spits it back out. At first I thought is was damaged or old re-writable CDs, but the same thing happens with music CD's as well. The nearest Apple store is 2 hours away, so the genius bar isn't really an option. I'm not all that concerned, external drives are pretty inexpensive, but if I can fix this one, that's my first option.

Not a diagnosis, but get a can of air and blow some around through the slot. There may be a bit of dust in the wrong place. Barring that, not much to do in diagnosis.

Wouldn't hurt to give something like this a try:

Use both of these and stick the tube into the slot and move it around as you give several good blasts:
PS: Some cleaning discs have Mac instructions to get the brushes to clean both lenses.
