Hey there. Hope you're having a great day. Had Mojave 10.14.1 installed for quite a while now. It was a straight clean install to 10.14.1. My media keys for controlling music was working as it's supposed to, no matter the app I used or in background. Suddenly something got messed up and now I'm not able to control anything accept iTunes or Safari (if in foreground with sound playing). I don't know whether this happened after restaring or installing a new app. Don't remember changing any system settings too.

Already tried re-enabling the Privacy>Accessibility settings for all the music apps in SystemPreferences. Doesn't help though.

Kindly provide your valuable input to fix this if you have previously encountered anything as such. I really don't like running the MediaEnabler apps which are just running consuming system resources though I believe it'll be consuming minimally for something that could be fixed natively.

It may help to provide more information?

What Mac?
What year?
Keyboard?

When you say "it was a straight clean install to 10.14.1", what specifically does that mean? You erased the drive, and installed Mojave 10.14.1?

Sorry for not including the device specific info. It's MacBook Pro 2015 15 -inch.

Yes, I was able to clean install by wiping drive with a 10.14.1 installer in a pen drive.

Thanks for that info.

I would start with trying "Safe mode", https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262, and see if the issue is still there. Safe mode disables a lot of self loading kexts, so your MBP will seem extremely slow.
Next, I would create a new "User account" in System Preferences > Users & Groups. Just to see if the issue is with your user account?
Then, I would try the NVRAM, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063 and SMC, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063 resets, to see if they clear the issue.

What are the "media keys for controlling music" as you call them??

Maybe you could provide a description of what you mean by your media keys.

EDIT:
Do I assume you mean this:
HIGH SIERRA MEDIA KEY ENABLER
App is renamed to Mac Media Key Forwarder
MilGraCom — High Sierra Media Key Enabler
and
https://www.imore.com/how-put-your-macs-media-keys-control-itunes-again

BTW:
Lots of hits when googling 'MEDIA KEY ENABLER problem Mojove'
https://www.google.ca/search?safe=a.....0.0..0.0.0.......0......gws-wiz.mOQSODhqppI

At least you're not alone with the problem!!! ;D

Especially this guy:

@Patrick, I took it to mean the "Pause/Play, Forward, & Back, F" keys at the top of most Apple Keyboards and notebooks.

Thanks Bob, and I don't know for sure or how it actually works, but I'm going to break one of my first rules and that is to assume this is what it is:
MAC MEDIA KEY FORWARDER
( Formerly known as High Sierra Media Key Enabler ) <—[NOTE NAME CHANGE}
Forwards media keys to iTunes or Spotify directly.

You can prioritize which app you would like to control or you can go with the default behaviour which controls the running app. The app runs in the menu bar.
MilGraCom — Mac Media Key Forwarder

Bottom line: It seems it just doesn't work properly with Mojave. That seems to be a fact!!!

Maybe time to use the Delete key!! ;D

Or go back to High Sierra???

I just thought of something else to check, System Preferences > Security & Privacy, select Privacy. Then you will need to go through all the options, to see if something needs access?

Would that be any difference to what the OP said they had already done??

Hey guys. Thanks for the replies and suggestions. It seems like there is an issue with Electron framework for which the app developer disabled the media key controls for the app altogether to not complicate the problem.

It seems like they complicated the issue rather than simplifying things and I trust they are going to put things back to a working state for users like yourself. Or does an earlier version still work properly that's also compatible with Mojave???

It seems like another case of pretty minimal software testing that's unfortunately becoming quite common these days.

Yes I agree. The app's dev said they'll be updating as soon as the electron's devs sort out the issue. There is no way to rollback to the old version, gotta stick with this.

There's usually always a way if one has enough resources. Just saying.... :Mischievous:
