Hello fellow users, this is my first thread and I am seeking help. I have had a mid-2011 MacBook pro since 2012 and now is the time to upgrade. My friend is selling a 2017 model and I am going to buy it. Problem is I would like to switch out his 128gb SSD for my 256SSD with also keeping everything from my 256 SSD

What is the process for doing so? Migrate the macs together first, then create a backup on the old mac and switch out the HD's? or just create a backup, move them over and install a fresh OSX on the 256SSD in the 2017 model then restore from backup?

Sorry I am not a huge mac guy when it comes to transferring and backing up. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You

Unfortunately, the drive types are totally different. SATA vs PCIe. You can put it into an external enclosure (USB 3) and use it that way.
