I can't find the right info on this so my questions is... can I run an ethernet adapter for internet access through a 2010 MBA model that has the Mini Display Port or is this only a capability with the Thunderbolt replacement port for the 2011 MBA models?

No, MiniDisplay Port is for audio (possibly) and video only, no data, that is a Thunderbolt/FireWire feature.

2011 or 2010?

Start here, https://everymac.com. They have all the specs for every Apple/Mac. So you will be able to compare any port/connection/cpu/graphics etc for any models you need.

As for the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter, I don't know. It should, if the adapter is compatible with the original Thunderbolt port.

Mini-displayport and Thunderbolt ports look exactly the same...but are different. As member ferrarr mentioned...mini-display port is primarily a video out port...thunderbolt port has multiple capabilities. Yes...you can get a Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter.
