Hi,

I recently got a 15inch 2018 MBP and I’ve noticed that whenever I plug it in to charge overnight, that when I wake in the morning the bottom of the MBP is warm and so is the charger. It’s not really really hot, but I’m aware that once the laptops reach 100% charge that they are meant to ‘trickle charge’ instead of pumping the full current all night.

When comparing to my 2015 MBP which has MagSafe 2, the bottom of the laptop and the charger is completely cool after charging overnight and wondered whether this was normal for 2018 USB C charging?

Apple have ran a load of ‘diagnostic tests’ and said that it passed all of them... if it’s normal then fine but with it being electricity related wanted to know if it was unsafe.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

If an Apple technician says it's normal, then there is probably nothing to worry about. One question; These "diagnostic tests" that Apple ran, was that at a store?

Thank you for your welcome :)

They didn’t give me a straight answer as such but more of a ‘yeah they kinda can...’ and then sort of said ‘we’ve put it through it’s paces with all the tests we’ve done and it’s all passed with no issues.’

The tests were done at an Apple store and then for a second opinion was sent away to an Approved Apple repair centre via the Apple online store where they had it for about a week and did a load of tests apparently and formatted and out a clean install of Mojave.

Are Apple stores not very competent?

Apple Store techs are competent, and if they sent your MacBook Pro to an Apple repair center, then you can be assured that it was thoroughly checked out. However, good advice is to keep a record of everything that was done in case something comes up in the future which relates to the same thing.

I suspect the reason it was sent out is that not all Apple Stores have the proper test equipment to run diagnostics on the new T2 chip which your MacBook Pro has. You might want to read up on the T2 chip to get a better understanding of what it does and what happens when it needs repairs. It's complex. :)

Thanks for your reply, I’ll look into the T2 chip it seems quite advanced!

Can I ask, do you have a recent MacBook Pro that charges via USB C? If so is yours slightly warm underneath after charging overnight? And the charger?

Thanks

When you charge your MBP, is the cover closed? Is it doing anything, or do you put it to sleep, or turn it off?

To me, it sounds like everything is working as it should.

Thanks for your reply. I plug it in and charge it overnight closed but sleeping. I rarely turn it off fully.
