Don’t know what is going on.
My screen on Mac is black. When I close lid, then open, my desktop shows for a second then Goes black. Pressing any key does not bring up password prompt nor anything at all. Neither does the Apple logo show.

I pressed and held power button..it turned off
Then I turned back on.
Apple logon and password prompt.
Now am back ok
Running Sierra 10.12.6
Have about half internal stg left. Battery is 100%

But wonder what happened
Mayb there is a glitch.
Hope my screen is not burning out!
Anyone else had this issue?

Some goofy things can happen and for no real or apparent reason and can sometimes be just one of those things.

Just in case there may be some surplus junk that might have caused the problem, try booting up into Safe Boot Mode, log in and then just Restart normally.

It would be a good idea to also check that your backup is working and current.

Lori:

Make sure you haven't set up a corner of the screen to shut off the display when you move your cursor to that spot. Take a look at System Preferences, Desktop & Screen Saver, Screen Saver, Hot Corners.

Oh I did not know this. Never have adjusted this!
looked and on bottom right says hot corner with a question mark.
Above that, shows black screen with my name and MacBook Pro......and Apple logo....no pics
So do I assume that this is my screen saver?

Don’t know if I ever set up a screen saver!

And when away and not using MacBook for a month......should I just close lid and put to sleep
OR
Press and hold off button to turn off?

I would suggest just using the normal Shutdown... command option that's under the top left Apple menu icon and then confirm (just hit the return/enter key). No need to use your mouse/trackpad pointer.

Great turned if off by shutdown..... now this may seem like a super silly question....
How do I turn it back on?
Never mind I figured it out...just closed lid after and then opened.....

If you just closed the lid, that only puts the MBPro to sleep, it does not do a complete shutdown.

The MBPro StartUp button is the circular button at the top right of the keyboard.
Which can also be used to shutdown by pressing and holding.

Newer models, without optical drives, have the power button, where the “eject” button was.
