Hello!

My macbook started freezing every time I started it. MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013)

I did the usual, reset PRAM and SMC, reformat, etc.

After doing that, I noticed that if I kept moving the mouse, my computer would no longer freeze. if I stopped moving the mouse, then the computer would freeze again.

The computer doesn't have this behavior if I start it in safe mode.

That's really annoying!

BT or wired mouse? Do you have another mouse to test with?

I said mouse earlier but I did it with the trackpad. I tried with an external mouse and keyboard. Same thing.

It's not that my mouse is not working, it's the computer that is completely frozen.

Is there a way to disconnect physically the trackpad and just use an external mouse to try?

Most likely a software problem. Something is interfering with either the graphics processes or maybe even BT. First thing to do is remove all your startup programs and any utilities that you may have that are running as soon as you boot the machine. Do you have any programs that enhance mouse movement or trackpad? If after removing all startup items the computer runs normally, try adding them back one by one to see which is the culprit.

That's what I was thinking, but it's a brand new installation. I erased the HD and reinstalled macOS. I double checked and there is no startup item.

If your MacBook Pro runs okay in safe mode, that eliminates hardware as the fault. Safe Mode removes all kexts (drivers) that are not Apple needed, all startup items, and even kills the sound module. Programs and certain processes can startup from hidden places in macOS and sometimes are hard to find. And according to specs, your machine uses an Intel Iris 5100 GPU which is integrated. Those almost never fail and if it did, it would show up in safe mode also.

When you say you reinstalled macOS with a brand new installation, where did the image come from? Was it one you used before or a brand new download from Apple?

I'm not super familiar with macOS, I just chose the reinstall macOS from the recovery mode, after I erased the disk. And today I installed Mojave from the Apple Store.

I am not using any device! I'm gonna use coconut!

I notice a new strange thing. I was looking at the log and then I used Safari. Using Safari, I stopped to move the cursor and it didn't freeze. When I shift tabbed to Console, it froze again. Really strange.

Sorry, what I want by devices was, are you using anything connected to any of the devices ports? USB, ethernet, HDMI, Thunderbolt?

After some test, I figured out new strange behaviors. If something is moving on my screen, no freeze.

I was on Youtube, and I played a video => no freeze during the entire video. I stopped the video => freeze after 2s.

I tried something else: I launch another video, and I minimized the window > freeze after 2s, but I could still hear the sound.

It looks like a video issue for sure, but why not in safe mode then!

That sounds like you have some sort of software conflict due to some third party Application software that would normally be disabled during a Safe Boot Mode boot.

If that's the case, the next job is to locate what exactly that third party thing is. but most likely something graphics related.

But why the connection between your mouse moving or not and graphics just doesn't make any sense to me. You have a strange problem that's for sure.

That's really strange, because like I said earlier it's a new installation, that means there is no third party software or anything. Maybe I should reinstall OSX again.

What kind of mouse are you using? Blue tooth? Wired? And do you have any other wireless BT connections such as the keyboard?
