After agonizing over the choice of what machine to get to replace my Mac mini, and thankful for the help I got from people on this forum, I finally decided on a MacBook Pro (i9, 32GB RAM, 512GB ssd) and I use it in clamshell mode. It arrived a couple of weeks ago and I have been very happy with its performance, especially compared to the Mini I had been using. The i9 is a 6 core chip and the addition of 32GB means I have not had my system barely able to process digital images.

The ability to disconnect the machine and take it with me when I travel is also a big advantage, and the only complaint I have is that there are not nearly as many ports as my wife's MacBook Pro. Still, it seems to have been a good decision and I wanted to thank those who contributed to my decision. It was expensive, but it is working perfectly.

I’m glad you found the right balance for your needs. It sounds like your patience, and questioning, paid off for you.

Congrats Mike.:) I know we discussed quite a few options regarding what computer to get to replace your Mini.

Regarding the ports issue. Over the years 3rd party folks have come out with docking stations designed for many Apple MacBook Pro's....which makes the process of going mobile & coming back home & plugging in much easier.

Here's an article to check out that lists some docking products that may do what you want. Probably other articles and other products out there as well.:)

I read through the article at the link, so thanks for posting it.

When I first set up the MBP I ended up using one port for power, one for the external monitor and one for my usb hub, and that took everything expect a single port, so I bought a simple dongle to take care of the issue (see here:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077FZQS95/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1).

It is OK in the short term, but I will need something better when I get some external drives, so your link is appreciated. I tried to buy a Thunderbolt 3 ssd to use as an external drive, but the thing would not work on my MBP and I had to return it. Odd, because it worked on my wife's 2017 MBP, but not on my 2018 MBP.
