I admit, I am a terrible procrastinator (and a bit of a cheapskate too, to be honest). Been struggling forever to keep any free space on the HD, which I swapped out a few years ago for a 480GB Crucial SSD.
Finally pulled the trigger on a 1TB Samsung EVO SSD from Amazon, $189 +tax.

After cloning and setting up the recovery partition, I switched it for the 480GB SSD. Everything boots and runs fine, so I decided to update the OS as well, from El Capitan to High Sierra. According to the install window I have about 2 hours and 13 minutes remaining.

If I remember from previous updates, those estimates tend to be very conservative . . . so hopefully I can play with it some tonight before hitting the sack.

Don't try "playing with it" and just let it do its thing and go to bed.

If it still seems "hung" in the morning, try doing a ShutDown and then a Start Boot. It may then even do another restart or two on its own.

Then go have another Sunday AM coffee and you may even want to put an once or two of whisky or rum in it!!

Installation is done, only took about 1 1/2 hours total. Now for the real fun, hunting down product keys and reactivating software . . . ;P

Hmmm…??? I guess you don't keep your "product keys" in your Keychain Access.app or some other organized place where they can be nice and handy.

Maybe you won't even need them if you just did a normal OS X upgrade. :Smirk:

IMO, The best place to keep your product keys is either with the original software or in your little notebook next to your Mac. :D Personally, I do not trust my Keychain to retain anything which is why I keep a copy of all my passwords and keys written down elsewhere.

And as to Mike needing his product keys... Since he just underwent a major hardware change, he will definitely need the keys to MS Office, Adobe software, and some others.

Does that usually happen even if on has made and used an exact clone with CCC (Carbon Copy Closer)???

Or do they keep track of the hard drive ID they were originally installed on???

Both MS and Adobe apps that require serial number activation will detect any major hardware change and will ask for the product key and reactivation. I've been through that many times with MS Office 2011 which is the first Mac Office product that required activation. Office 2008 could be moved around without having to activate again.

I know from experience that MS uses a hardware algorithm to determine whether its apps need to be activated again. A long time ago (during my Windows days) I knew what they specifically looked for but nowadays I do not know exactly what it is they detect.
