Hi, I have some weird issues with my MacBook Pro 13" late 2013.

The first problem is that the screen doesn't show anything. If I turn on the MacBook the screen stays black, and after it started up the backlight comes on but still no image. When I connect HDMI it just works fine and boots (only in safe mode)

The second problem is that the battery isn't recognized. If I connect the charger, the light comes on green, then orange indicating it's charging but it isn't. When running Hardware Test it says the battery is not detected, nothing else.

Does anyone know what is going on with this MacBook? Cloud these issues be related?

Welcome to our forums.

It doesn't appear that the two problems you indicate are related. The black screen is likely a graphics problem, perhaps a bad GPU. The battery not being recognized could well be a dead battery or a problem with the charging circuitry.

I assume you mean when you attach an external monitor? Otherwise?

Yes, sorry. I mean with an external monitor attached. I also found out it boots up fine normally without the internal screen connected, everything works. So it seems with the screen LVDS cable connected it creates some kind of short. Can't be a GPU problem because it works perfectly via HDMI. But I don't know where the short could be..

And the battery is probably just dead instead, or at least the battery control board. The cells itself are probably fine.

Thanks for clarifying that. Yes, I agree that it's likely a video cabling problem since you can send the video to an external monitor ok. Try to track it down by going to www.ifixit.com and take a look at their disassembly instructions. The cables that are most likely to give trouble are the ones that pass thru the lid to the display. Since the lid of the MacBook Pro is opened and closed many times this may lead to excess cable wear. We have seen this before with older MacBook Pros. Your machine is a 2013 model approaching 5 years of use.

As for the battery, you might be able to find a genuine Apple OEM replacement, but of that I'm not sure. I know you can find a replacement battery (not OEM) on eBay.

Let us know if we can be of more assistance.
