I need to replace my HD in my 2011 Macbook Pro. My buddy hooked me up with a 500gig Samsung SSD. Will all that I need to swap the files from the old to the new is a USB to Sata cable? Also what software program would I need to be able to run this? I know I will need to do a backup first.

Thanks

Just a word of caution, I seem to recall that some Samsung drives don't play well in Macs. If you post what drive you have, maybe someone here will be able to determine if it is one of the troublesome ones. I think it was the EVO drives that seemed to struggle.

Samsung SSD Hard drive

So I have another post up about replacing my old HD with a newer Samsung SSD, one of the members metioned that some of the Samsung's didn't seem to work well with the Macbook Pro and I should ask about the SSD that I plan to use to make sure its okay. So I will be planning on using a Samsung 850 Pro 512gig SSD does anyone have any experience with these SSD's?

I think that one will work. I use an earlier version of this device. It has worked very well for me. The unit I have doesn't suppport offline duplication but this one dies.

That sure sounds familiar and I think it was harryb that had posted some comments and also included the Samsung 850 Pro models.

I haven't tried searching and harryb hasn't posted here. Yet.

That's great price for the Voyager. I think when I started looking they were a good bit more than that. I usually like their stuff. If I needed one right now I'd certainly grab one at that pricce.

It sure is, but it's not their fastest model.

I still have and use one of their older NewerTech Voyager Quad USB/Firewire models and it has been excellent but if I recall cost about $180.00±cdn some years ago. Now replaced by a different model with different and later type port connections.

PS: I had a cheap USB drive dock for a bit quite some years ago but it couldn't boot any Mac I had so I returned it to the more PC oriented store.

EDIT:
I just checked and NewerTech still sells their "Q" with USB and FW, and now only about $95.00usd:
NewerTech Voyager™ Q
