Things to do toay: Convince Charlie, Nick, et. al to pay for my forum services based on what I think they are worth.
Benefit fro them: I forgo any and all big hats now and in the future in perpetuity.
Benefit for me: Funds which can be used for future tech purchases.

Sounds like a plan.

@Patrick I'll cut you in for a percentage if you are willing to assist in pressuring them in this (oops, I meant "assist in negotiations") lol

Let me ask you tis: Would you do it if the repair were free? I'm not happy about having someone crack open a new $3,000 laptop to do a repair of any kind.

That's a completely different situation and I somehow don't think you're going to see it happen and I did not suggest anywhere and intentionally, of anyone "cracking open a new $3,000 laptop to do a repair of any kind".

I only suggested cleaning around the edges of the sticking keys, no dismantling of any kind suggested and BTW, not all users seem to have the problem from what I've read.

And as for your comment to Charles:
@ chscag: Te sarcasm in your tone is duly noted, sir. (I like sarcasm. )
personally I didn't notice any sarcasm at all FWIW.

BTW: I don't have access to any Apple Store or genius without taking a very expensive ferry trip and at least a full day just traveling to the closest one. But we do have some good Authorized Apple Techs close by if they are allowed to do such repairs or replacements. But probably still cost at least $700.00usd which is equivalent to close to $920.00cdn. That's a good whack of money here!!!

Hmmm… I'd have to give that some thought, especially considering your president's attitude toward us Canadians and other nationalities from taking away some work from all US citizens!!!

I think I'll just stay on this side of the boarder thanks and maybe just provide some free suggestions or advice. I sure have some of that for what's his name.

But I don't do religion or politics on any forum!!!

@pm-r: According to what I have read thus far, the Apple repair for this keyboard issue is to open up the aluminum case and replace the keyboard. It is not clear (to me) if the replacement keyboard is a new part or the same as the original part.

I did not mean to suggest tat your guitar pick fix involved opening the computer case.

Thanks Marrk and I can imagine that is typical of what Apple would do, and just replace the keyboard from their stock. And I sure don't know for sure but I would would imagine that they would use any "refurbished" units before they would use new ones.

I had only been looking for other options and to save $700.00 + $$$.

I guess I'll have to take a look and see if I can find out why the replacement is such a hassle other than some more poor design by his highness Sir Jonathan Ive and his mad search to gain thinness. :Not-Amused:

UPDATE:

Today, I went to the Genius Bar at the Apple store at The Grove. They did a diagnostic on the system. Everything was working, including the keys. (My keyboard problem is, and always has been, intermittent, so this made sense.) The genius said that he could "clean" the keys, either by lifting each balky key slightly and blasting in some air, or by removing each key. Another option would be to ship the unit to a repair center and have them replace the top half of the case. The last option was to do nothing.

I decided to do nothing for the moment. My issue is now a matter of record with Apple. If something happens again, we have a reference. Since I am still eligible, I will probably buy some Apple Care Protection.

Note: The genius said that these keyboards have been a problem since 2016, and they did a redesign of the keyboard for 2017.

P.S. Last night, I noticed that my InCase Hardshell Case is cracked. Five months old. Jeesh.

Yeah, InCase has gone down hill in recent years. My last InCase hard shell lasted 5 years and as a matter of fact, was still on the machine looking good when I sold it. Send an email to support at InCase and see what they say. Who knows?, they might ship you a new one.

Also, good move on the keyboard. At least now you're on record with Apple so that any fault in the future that may occur will be covered. Purchasing Apple Care is likewise a good idea.

@ chscag: The e-mail to InCase is already sent, my good amigo. I have two other InCase products. They are carry bags for laptops. I like InCase very much. I just think that a hardshell should last more than six months.

With regard to the MBP, the outcome I got was the outcome I wanted. Having someone start hacking away at my keyboard, or replacing a top case, holds no interest for me. And the problem is intermittent. Most of the time, I am at home, and, most of the time, I am using a wireless keyboard. That's why it took me six months to become aware of the keyboard problem.

Once again, thanks to you and to the Forum. I'd be nowhere without you guys. :)

P.S. Someone on the Forum stated that the left side Thunderbolt ports are faster/better than the right side Thunderbolt ports. I ran this by the genius, and he said that they take these ports out and switch them around and it makes no difference. I don't know if that is precisely an disclaimer, but he clearly implied that all the Thunderbolt ports were the same.

I believe that someone just happened to be me that I probably gleaned from everymac.co.

But by all means do some of your own checking and maybe things might have changed. Try a websearch on:
MBPro Thunderbolt port speed
https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=MBPro+Thunderbolt+port+speed&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

As I recall, Apple has done the different speed thing with different ports on different Mac products over the years, so not exactly a new thing.

Mark, a close friend of mine who is a graphic artist recently got a new Top end MBP. Her one number key was doing that. She took it 60 miles to the closest Apple store and they took off the key cap and cleaned and put it back on and so far it's fine. They did tell her though if the Butterfly mechanism broke taking the cap off she would have to let them send it to get the top replaced. I will keep all posted if she again has issues.

@ dtravis7: When I went in, the genius offered to take a few keys off and clean them or send the unit out for a keyboard replacement, but he didn't mention the possibility of breaking the butterfly. Good to know.

Probably just as well Marrk. Apple has now extended the warranty on those keyboards to 4 years so you should be in good shape if the keyboard needs to be replaced during that time.
