Those machines are old and will definitely not get you decent speed. They are likely not going to run the latest version of macOS decently either and that's required to have a recent browser so that you can visit the sites you want to. Your budget is quite low for any decent Mac. You might be better served with a Windows PC (for that budget, you can get a newer machine) since your use case isn't Mac centric.

If you have a small budget...and getting one of these is all that the budget will allow...ok. But you probably need to forget about the requirements mentioned in post #1 ("I prefer something with decent speed and something that will stay cool and quiet.").

These MacBooks won't be fast...won't stay cool...and won't stay quiet. Biggest issue with these MacBooks (in my opinion)...is the graphics hardware. Lots of stuff on the internet require good graphic's hardware...and when a computer doesn't have good graphics hardware it is slow...it runs hot...which means the fan will be at or near max rpm's (which means it won't be quiet)...and if you have it on your lap...your legs will get very hot. Especially with You Tube and maybe Facebook with all the videos people post to their pages.

Don't get me wrong...this computer can do some things ok. But much of the time it will be hot, slow, and noisey (fan). Hey...these are almost 10 year old computers...it comes with the territory.:)

I bought a 17 inch HP 1 TB Windows. 10 Tablet for around $400 from Best Buy, this to backup all my other computers both my old Mac Book Pro and other Windows computers.
Only thing it lacks is a lighted keyboard.

An important question to ask yourself is...which OS do you want to work with...macOS or Windows? If you really want to work with the macOS...save your money so you can purchase something newer than a 2009/2010 MacBook.:)

I too have been guilty of advising people to buy a Windows laptop PC when price and performance are big concerns. You can get a current Windows laptop running Windows 10, brand new for the price of a 5 year old second hand MacBook Pro. But, and its a big but. There are very good reasons why they are cheaper. When it comes to computers you pretty much get what you pay for.

Not too long ago Rod my wife got a brand new Samsung laptop from where she works. Just looking at the specs on paper...it's a pretty impressive unit. But pick it up...feel it...and use it...OMG...what a piece of garbage. The build quality is absolutely abysmal. It feels more like a mock-up prototype unit with no guts (just a shell). Kind of like the fake plastic food you see sitting inside a brand new refrigerator at the store.;)

Pick up a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air...and OMG vs. the Samsung. If someone was shopping for a bullet-proof vest...the Samsung would be like a bullet-proof vest made from a single sheet of paper...and the MacBook Pro would be like kevlar.:)

I'm sure the Samsung is representative of what Windows notebook computers are like overall (maybe even a little bit better). But boy...what a difference in build quality from Apple notebooks!:)

Laptops computers are not bullet proof vests, and if spending around $3000 for an Apple Mac laptop because it's really bullet proof makes one happy go for it.

But today for me laptops are like any other use and throw away when they quit appliances, $400 is more then enough for me to spend on an appliance.

Same with tablets Apple iPads iSOs are costing three times the price of a Android tablet, no more iPads for me.

I knew someone wouldn't understand the analogy...read too quickly...then blast off an inaccurate reply. Lol

Never said laptops were bullet proof vests. I said comparing the build quality of a Samsung notebook to Apple notebooks...was like comparing a bullet proof vest made of 1 sheet of paper compared to one made from kevlar.

Also...most Apple notebooks do not cost $3000. You decided to choose one of the more expensive Apple notebooks to try and make a point...which is really not representative of the overall average cost of Apple notebook computers. Also remember that many Apple users keep their computers for 3-5 years...and many times longer. I happen to personally still be using a 2011 MacBook Pro for my daily computing (7 years old). And...the Apple computer value retention/resale is much better than Windows computers.

Many Windows notebooks could probably last just as long...but because they are built so cheaply...they basically are falling apart before the hardware itself from a performance standpoint is obsolete. Many/most computer users use thier computers to do things like email, internet browsing, social networking, You Tube, etc. Don't need the latest & greatest to do that...but many Windows notebook users can be forced to purchase soemthing new...because the old computer is falling apart.

I guess our good member "ipadder474" has never priced the Microsoft Surface line of computers or Dell Alienware. LOL Or maybe the Samsung Galaxy line of phones and tablets?

The bottom line and I think what Nick was also saying... is you pay for what you get. Pay for cheap, you get cheap. ;)

There is just one (1) computer that uses the Apple OS and it's Apple, there are many other computers not Mfg. by Apple they use the Microsoft Windows OS.

This is the main reason Apple can demand their higher prices for their computers, sure one can install Microsoft Windows OS on an Apple computer but why do this?

The world computer users know that the Microsoft Windows OS is far better then the Apple OS, and it has been better for many years and nothing Apple can do to change this.

Yes one may call the non Apple computers cheap and they surly are much cheaper then Apple computers, but to say all buyers of these lower priced computers are just getting cheap is a real funny joke.

What world are you living in? As someone who has used all three (Windows, Linux, macOS) for many decades, I can definitely say with authority that Windows is far behind macOS on Linux on a number of fronts. The last "good" version of Windows was the professional version Windows NT 3.0 that was meant for developers and not gamers and as such wasn't that loved by the bulk of users.

I mentioned this in my last post...but then I deleted it to be nice.:)

Now I will mention it once again. If you're so anti-Apple...why are you spending your valuable time here...unless you're just trolling for an argument?? All opinions/views are welcome...but you seem to be setting a trend that's certainly not objective & unbiased.:(
