I need the best laptop for designing in Photoshop and Lightroom.
These are the only softwares I use.

I just sold:
Apple MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display
Quad-core i7 2.2GHz, 16GB, 256GB, Iris Pro G

Because it didn't have enough space for what I need. I do have Jottacloud AND iCloud but even when syncing with iCloud it took up space on my Mac. I thought iCloud would store stuff so I could keep my mac clean? (I know nooooothing *Manuel*)

Will the new Macbook Pro 15 512gb with touchbar be a good deal or would you recommend buying one without a touchbar and spec it up with more space and ram?
I really don't know much about what's inside a Mac, I just need one that can run PS and LR at the same time and not be slow.

I do not want a desktop, so not iMac Pro.

What would you recommend? thank you for any tips.

The 15" MacBook Pro comes with the TouchBar so there is no choice for TB or no TB unless you drop down to a 13" machine. A new 15" MacBook Pro fully loaded is going to cost close to $3000.00 so you really need to look at what you want to spend.

A much better buy is the 2017 27" iMac - but you don't want a desktop. ;)

A warm welcome to Mac-Forums, Rita.

I echo our Admin's comments. But no iMac, okay, understood.

From what you have posted in respect of your previous experience and prospective needs, I think you probably need 1TB of storage.

Of course, this could be shared between your Mac and an External Hard Drive (EHD).

On the other hand, Touch Bar is not that big a deal and the 13 inch is not that very much smaller then the 15 inch when you see them side by side.

Recently, I bought my wife a fully spec'd 13 inch MacBook Pro and that would, in my view, not only meet your needs, but cost less.

Just my thoughts.

Two things:

1. Are you sure you NEED the BEST laptop? And if so...do you have the budget to purchase the "best laptop". Since if you don't...then getting the "best" laptop will not be possible.
2. If you sold your old laptop because it didn't have enough onboard storage...then getting the maximum amount of buildin storage would be obe of the most important upgrades. And this will add a bunch of $$$ to the price.

By the way...since storage was one of the concerns with your previous MacBook Pro...a 15" MacBook Pro with the maximum storage upgrade & CPU upgrade will cost $4199.

That's the budget you need to have if you want the best!:)

What's wrong with a good used Refurbished MacBook Pros from somewhere like macsales (owc) if they have something close for required performance, but have them upgrade the memory and drive space where possible to meet what's wanted. Drive space can be reasonably cheap, and then there's always fast external drives storage available.

One can check Apple's Refurb section as well. But not mods allowed. You can get what they have listed. Period!!

I'm prepared to pay for 4000 but I heard the touchbar isn't worth it. And I don't want to buy a notebook just for the toucbar if I can get a much better machine for less without the TB.
I just need a fast one. I don't need more than 512gb, but IF I could figure out how to store my photos on my Air Time Capsule / Jotta / iCloud then 256gb would do :)

Thanks for your replies. I think the 27" is too big to work on. ;D

Not too big to work on, too big to carry around maybe..... A 27" desktop such as the iMac is ideal for doing photo and video work because of the better graphics and resolution, however, if you need the portability, then it's not for you.

...then 256gb would do :)

In post #1...it was mentioned that the reason you sold your previous MacBook Pro was because it didn't have enough storage. If you purchase another MacBook Pro (with 256gig of storage)...then you will be in the "same boat". If understanding how to store data in other places is the way to make 256gig of onboard storage work...then from what's been mentioned...the previous MacBook Pro would not have needed to be sold.

The same thoughts were going through my head Nick and probably others, and then realized that maybe the old 2.2GHz MBPro just wasn't quite fast enough — if one could even notice with a bit faster Mac.

PS: Using a nice 27" doesn't need to be "too big" if one only uses part of the display's total area for one's work.
