Good morning everyone,

I have a barely one day old brand new out of the box MacBook Air (early 2015) that shut down on its own. I was actually working on it and fell asleep only to wake up a few hours later to find it completely turned off. I kept pressing the track pad wondering why it wasn't coming back on and finally gave up and pressed the power button. When it came back on, I expected to see a "your computer shut down because of a problem" message but I didn't. There was also no indication that it had installed auto updates and restarted itself or anything. I lost all of my browser tabs but luckily nothing important. Is this normal for a MacBook Air? Does anyone know why it would do this?

Welcome to the forum.

What was the battery state when it restarted? What are the System Preferences for Energy Saver? The term "a few hours" isn't very specific, but if you can provide more information we can see if there are other things to check.

Hello and thanks for the welcome.

I fell asleep around 2:50 am and woke up around 6:45 am to find the laptop off. I do remeber waking up before 6:45 am (not sure what time) tapping the trackpad, continuing to read the article for about 1-2 more minutes and then drifting back to sleep. The next time I woke up the laptop was completely off.

I am running macOS Sierra 10.12.3. I have attached some images of the system preferences and storage space if it helps.

Again, what was the battery state when it restarted? What may have happened is that the battery went down so low the system shut down. Or if you were in bed, it could have overheated because it was blocked by sheets/blankets, etc. It's hard to tell from your description so far.

At this point, I wouldn't worry about it, you have some time to continue to use it before it would have to be returned for refund and your warranty runs for a year, minimum, so you can get it repaired if there is any issue.

So, use it, see how it goes on battery and make an assessment then.

Battery was fully charged and plugged in all night. Whatever happened had nothing to do with the battery. It also wasn't hot, hasn't gotten hot at all since I've had it.

I bought it brand new from Newegg so you're right about being able to return it it something else happens.
