My wife's mid 2010 Macbook pro had a problem with screen just going blank while she was on it. She put it aside and I picked it up about a year later and am trying to resurrect it.
Replaced the battery and fired it up - it works, but the screen does go black shortly (a few minutes) after using it. Power still on, as the keys are still back-lit. One time, the was some sound (an ad) playing as the screen went blank, and it repeatedly skipped, sounding like a stuck CD, so I don't think that it is still functional when blank.
After online searches, I've reset the PRAM (opt/cmd/P/R) several times, which seemed to keep the screen up for a little longer period, but it still went black.
I did a "safe reset"(?) by restarting with shift/S. I thought that did it, because I had no problems for a couple of days, but alas the blank screen is back.
I've seen other resets/factory resets but don't want to erase or delete everything on there (I still don't know everything, because I haven't had the time to look all through everything before the screen goes blank.)
I did read of a glitch that some Macbook pros from that era have that may cause this. There was a possible fix that could be downloaded, but required a newer OS (this one's is 10.6.8). I couldn't download a new OS due to the screen blacking out.

Can someone help me? Any suggestions? Am about to safe restart again and see if that works. I realize it is an old computer, but I'd like to get it functional so that my daughter can use it for homework, etc. No need for gaming, lots of streaming/surfing, etc.

Many thanks

Noticed that after closing laptop (did not shut it down) that it is very hot and sounds like fan is running. Could it be that screen is going blank due to overheating? Does fan (fans?) need to be replaced? Any thoughts on this or previous experience with this?

MacBook Pro's getting hot and fans running is not unusual. But it wouldn't hurt to open it up…and blow it out with some canned air.

As far as the display. Could be a loose or damaged cable.

Another way to isolate things is…connect an external monitor…and see if the video cuts out. If it does (on the external display). Then there may be a logic board issue (and not the MacBook Pro's display itself).

The 2010 15" MBP had GPU problems that were once covered by a REP, but no longer. Blank displays and kernel panics were some of the symptoms, as were heat and both fans running at high speed. Unfortunately Apple now classes this MBP as vintage with no spares support. An ARS could run the VST test to determine if this is the problem.
