I have been using my (early 2013 2.7GHz i7, 16GB RAM) 15" rMBP in clamshell mode with a nice Dell external monitor. I am doing that because the retina screen glare has caused trouble for my eyes and I can do my photo editing much more comfortably with the matte screen monitor. I did play around a bit using the monitor along with the retina screen as dual monitors for the MBP and that made me wonder if the MBP can handle two external monitors in clamshell mode.
The MBP has 2 thunderbolt connectors which double as dvi connectors. There is also an HDMI connector so there are plenty of ports, but I do not know if the MBP is capable of handling 2 external monitors and, if so, it they both have to be dvi or one can be dvi and one HDMI. Perhaps someone has done this and knows the answer?
Thank you.
UPDATE:
Never mind. I decided to try it using my TV as a second monitor and it works just fine. I can not use all three (the Retina screen and the two external "monitors") but it handles 2 external monitors just fine. I should have thought of using the TV and trying it before I posted.
