how to transfer your photos and videos on ipad to USB external HD via mbpr /direct?

mbpr's iphotos has the ipad showing under "DEVICES" but doesnt seem to show any photos even though there are 100s in my ipad. is there anyway of transferring from my ipad to my USB external HD?
