A friend of mine has a MacBook Pro13 and every now and again she has the cursor jumping all over the screen. The same occurs when she is using her Magic Mouse. With a USB connected mouse there is no problem.

She is running Snow Lepeord and I would assume that it is up to date. I'll have to get her to upgrade the Mavericks me-thinks?

Any ideas please folks?

Have someone open the MacBook Pro and check the battery to see if it's swollen. A jumping cursor can be caused by the battery pushing up on the trackpad from below. If the battery is old and swollen or just swollen, it should be replaced before it causes damage to the machine.

Thank you for that. I will see if I can get her to bring it round tomorrow and I will open it up and see?

But, if she plugs a USB mouse in it seems to be OK? I thought that the track pad would still be operative?

Jumping cursor & upgrade?

I am going to help a neighbour to upgrade her MacBook Pro from Snow leopard to Yosemiite. Yesterday she told me of a problem she is having with the trackpad where the cursor will randomly jusmp all over the screen. It is an intermittent problem and sometimes doesn't happen for days, other times quite frequently. She normally runs the MBP on the battery.

My question is would it be better to chase the problem before or after the upgrade?

I have done a search on the problem and am wondering if, running on the battery, it could be that the battery is starting to swell?

My apologies for posting this here. I had totally forgotten that I had had the same problem almost exactly a year ago. I blame it on me being an old sod! I had checked the battery last year and it looked the same as mine and not deformed.

I am now wondering if it could be temperature related, because we have had several weeks of mid 30s here? Probably the same last July I don't remember?

To save confusion here would it be possible for the moderators to delete this post and I will continue on the original?

My apologies for not replying to this before:Oops::Oops: It must have gone completely out of my mind?

I had checked the battery last year and it was OK, no deformation at all. The MBP ran OK and no problems until a short while back and I was told yesterday that it has started to jump the cursor all over the place again. I am wondering if it could be a temperature problem as we have had temps in the mid 30s now for several weeks. Probably the same last July but I can't remember?

As I said in the duplicate thread, hopefully to be deleted, I will be doing an upgrade from Snow Leopard to Yosemite very soon and I am wondering if the upgrade would possibly effect it. So would it be better to chase the cursor problem before or after the upgrade???

Take another look at her battery. The swelling does not have to be very noticeable, just enough to put upward pressure on the trackpad. Getting hot over there in July? Come to Texas if you think it's hot there. Our temps this week are all 100 F or over. Thank goodness for air conditioning. O:)

For those not familiar with Celsius: 35C ("in the 30s") = 95F.

I don't think the temperature is the root cause here. Find out where she places her hand when idle, and whether there could be a static electricity issue.

You and me both. It's been in the high 30s all week (95-100F) and let's just say that the AC has been getting some exercise. ;)

The temperatures won't be the culprit and most likely, it's Bluetooth related. My Magic Mouse, if there might be disturbances, will jump and skip. Do you have a clear line of sight between the mouse and the computer?

Ta for the replies folks. She will probably be coming around later today, After I have changed my Livebox router for one that doesn't have a knackered VIOP feature ;D

I will check out the suggestions then. Ta again.

Well tyical university student. She starts back next week after 3 months off! and told me that the jumping cursor hasn't gone away. So I have had another look at the battery and I even removed it, still connected and whilst supporting the MBP powered it up with the battery underneath but not touching the unit. The cursor still bounced, but I noticed that it only bounced vertically now! If you move it across the screen it just goes up and down in the new place. So there was definitley no pressure from the battery. The battery also looks OK and I can't see any swelling at all.

I tried the 'ignore trackpad when mouse connected' in Accessibility and the mouse was perfectly stable with the mouse on. So was the trackpad sometimes, but not all the time when the mouse was switched off.

I then booted in Safe mode and nearly went boss eyed trying to keep up with it with the mouse disconnected. So, I am now wondering if it could be the tracpad itself? I thought that they would be an arm and a leg to buy, but they seem a reasonable price?

Nearly forgot!! I also cleaned around the very edge of the pad with a cotton bud damp with Isopropyl Alcohol, just damp.

It's always possible that it's the trackpad itself. If all other possibilities have been explored & no solution found…could be the trackpad. I don't think that the exact model 13" MBP was mentioned. But checking a 2012 13" MBP…a trackpad can be purchased for about $35 here in the States. I know that you're located "off the beaten path"…so maybe they cost a bit more.

Sorry about the delay but we have been away for a few days. I will be ordering a new track pad via amazon U.K. and it also seems that there was a warning about the battery. What it was is unclear, but as she has had battery problems a while back I think it would be an idea to change that as well? She tends to use it on the battery and run it down to under 20% quite frequently. I don't know if that would be enough to stress it?

The MBP is a 2010 unibody type, the same as mine apart from that strange azerty keyboard the French use!! Who the **** else would put the numerics and 'full stop' as upper case?

Is there any possibility of a bit of advise as to the best battery to get this side of the pond please??

OK, now I have had the trackpad, battery and the young lady who owns the MBP all together, along with the MBP.

I have changed the trackpad and I couldn't get to look at the battery in the machine because the lass who owns it is at university in Toulouse, about 70 miles away. She returned home today, for the weekend, and I tried to change the battery, after I had fitted the new track pad, to find out that the one I have ordered does not fit. I had ordered it on the info that I had. The battery I ordered is an A1331 and the one fitted is an A1332! The recesses on the side opposite the plug don't line up!!! I have had a look back on both the U.K. and the French Amazon sites and can't even see the 1332, just the 1331 and a 1322?

The name on the replacement is Floureon and I chose that one as it had some good write ups. Now I have to contact Amazon to see what I can do to find the correct battery? It would be lovely if someone told me that the 1322 was a direct replacement for the 1332, but I won't hold my breath in hope??

I have refitted the old battery and the trackpad seems to be fine at the moment, but as the battery has played up before I think that it does need to be replaced.

I assume that nobody knows the answer about the battery?

I have tried to find answers by various google searches but because of the weekend I can't contact the supplier and the only info that I have managed to dig up keeps on about iPhone batteries with the same number of A 1332! If the 2 machines do have the same part number then it is a really stupid and confusing situation?

I will see if I can contact Floureon, the people who made this battery, on Monday?

Well I for one am completely confused about the battery you need. You start on about a MacBook Pro and then go off talking about iPhone batteries. If it helps...

FWIW: The model 6,1 Late 2009 and the model 7,1 Mid 2010 use an A1331 battery.
An Apple iPhone 4 uses a A1332 battery.

All pretty basic Internet info and readily searchable info just using the battery numbers after 'Apple'.

Ta for that info pm-r.

I think that we both, the student owner and me, had a senior moment with that number. I have now rechecked the correct number and it is 1322!! I really will have to wind my glasses up and see if they work any better? (don't worry, just my twisted sense of humour??)

New battery now ordered from Amazon.fr. Amazon are really worth dealing with with their returns policy as it is. It's a great service.
