Scanbar? Are you talking about the rotating daisy or is it an actual progress bar?
Can you post a pic of it?

progress bar

The rotating daisy would appear above an progress bar as you suggeseted.
Will post a picture in a bit. but it would take a good 15 minutes.

Two ideas...and one suggestion.

Ideas:

- Could be some "screwy" software installed on the drive.
- Could be the hard drive going bad (slow startups/reboots can be a sign of a dying HD).

Suggestion:

- Install a fresh copy of the OS on an external HD...and boot the computer from it. If everything is relatively normal...then that would indicate something is up with that internal HD (maybe one of the ideas I mentioned).

I just bought a new Macbook Pro over the weekend and had my local Apple store migrate everything from my old 2009 Macbook. My old computer now acts exactly as you state. When you power up you get a gray screen with the Apple logo. Below that you get the round spinning thing and a progress bar below that. I believe that indicates the hard drive has been emptied. I would also like to know if reinstalling the operating system will bring it to to a fresh start ready for a new owner.

@joekar:

Please do not hi-jack someone else's thread. If you're sure the thread has run its course you can add on to it for an additional question or start your own thread.

For info sake: Your hard drive was not emptied as the data was migrated (copied) to your new machine. The progress bar is not an indication of an empty hard drive. It's exactly as Nick stated above. Read his reply to the original thread starter.

If the bar in question is the one I am thinking of it will also appear if the Mac goes to sleep because it is very low on battery. The file that is created can be quite large and a bit slow to load when the Mac is connected to electrical power.

You should not be seeing this every time the machine boots. As the guys have suggested that might mean hard drive issues.
