Help needed with data recovery

Hello,

The hard drive on my MacBook (2009) was recently replaced. None of my files or photos could be recovered from my defunct hard drive. I have a WD My Passport backup that contains just about all that I have lost, but I cannot figure out how to get that backup onto my new hard drive.

Can anyone help me with this?

How did you make the backup, Time Machine? And have you already created a new account on the new hard drive that was installed?
