Flaw in Screen

I have lately noticed a tiny black spec in my screen. It will not clean off, so I do not think it is on the surface. I think it is some sort of a flaw that has developed in the screen.

Is it normal for this sort of thing to happen over time? This machine was bought in March 2010. I'm not too worried about it, but has anyone else got this?

If it's not on the glass in front of the screen (or on the back side of the glass between the glass and the LCD), it sounds like you might have a dead pixel. It can happen on LCD's; most manufacturers have a specific number of dead pixels that are considered "acceptable" prior to being considered for replacement.

This article contains what is claimed to be a leaked photo of the actual policy: Leaked Apple dead pixel policy allows two for iPad, none for iPhone but I can't verify if it's true or not. If it is true, on a 13" screen up to 5 dead pixels are considered acceptable prior to repair/replacement.

If you have Apple care and the problem bothers you (it would probably bother me depending on where the pixel was) I would probably arrange to go to an apple store with my laptop and talk to them about it.

Thanks, Neth. Thus far, it is a small issue to me. And I worry that screen replacement, even if it is at no charge, may open up opportunities for other things to go wrong or get "fixed" wrong. At least, that's what happens when I take my car to the car mechanic.

Maybe next month I'll run it down to The Apple Store at the The Grove, just for an opinion.
