they may be effected by a power surge, but I have had no problems with them

Do any chargers work, or is there any damage to the power input on your Macbook or macBook pro

That's odd, i have had the same charger for over 4 years now. Mine gets really hot when I'm doing a lot of work while its charging but other then that it works just fine. A power surge could definitely because that but 2? That's a bit weird. Do you travel a lot with your chargers or do the wires get pinched rolled up incorrectly?
