I took out my optical drive and put in an SSD and now i want to use the optical drive externally. what kind of SATA connection does the MBP 13" mid-2009 use? I can not seem to find the answer anywhere.

Place the optical drive you removed in a SATA type USB carrier (can be purchased most anywhere) and attach it to your machine via a standard USB cable. That's all you need to do to have it work as an external optical drive.

thanks and one more question. do you know if the superdrive (optical drive whatever you want to call it) requires 5v or 5v+12v to run?

It'll run fine with the 5V provided by the USB ports to the external carrier. Some external carriers are self powered running off AC to a DC conversion of 5V. Just depends on what kind of carrier you buy. The self powered models are more reliable but cost more.
