Two questions (I searched, and found conflicting answers):

1) On my late '09 MBP, can I use a single 4GB RAM module in place of the (2) OEM 1GB modules?

2) Can I remove (1) of the OEM 1GB modules and replace it with a 4GB module, for a total of (5) GBs of RAM?

Thanks in advance.

1) Probably.

2) Yes.

In either case you are not going to get the full 4GB of RAM performance. Your MBP is designed to use both RAM slots with equal amounts of RAM in each slot. Buy your RAM in a kit. So, if you want 4GB, get 2x2GB modules.
Using 4GB and 1GB will not give you anything better than 2GB performance. Waste of money doing it that way.

Got it. Thanks. I'll probably hold off until I save up for the 8GB (2X4GB) kit.
