Macbook Pro won't recognize external drive

I have a 17" 500 GB Mac Book Pro, which I've had for a 1 1/2 year. I have a Lacie external backup that has been giving me trouble backing-up since last december. Now the mac won't recognize the lacie at all, and is giving me problems with my sd card reader. I did a software update, but it still won't recognize it. Any suggestions?

Perhaps there is a problem with the USB port. Or the cable if you are using the same cable for both devices. If so, try replacing the cable. If not, run the Apple Hardware Test.
