My Macbook Pro's volume, screen brightness, and keyboard brightness keys do not work. The F3 and F4 keys do work however. I've read that sometimes you need to press the Fn key along with the volume/brightness keys or adjust the settings in System Preferences.

Holding the Fn key along with the volume/brightness keys does nothing and whenever I go to Keyboard under System Preferences, it freezes and I have to force quit. I don't think it's any physical damage, because all of my other keys work perfectly. What should I do?

Your Mac's Specs
MacBook Pro 15" 2014, 2.2GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 250GB SSD, OSX 10.9.5 - iPhone 5s 16gb
Try booting your MBP from the OSX install disk. When in there, choose utilities from the top menu then choose Disk Utility, when in Disk Utility click on your HDD then choose repair disk, once this has completed then click repair permissions.
This may solve the problem.
If not I would recommend backing up your MBP and doing a fresh install.
Hope this helps

Exactly the same problem here (MBPro OSX 10.6.6). Tried the Disk Utilities found rebooting with the Install DVD but nothing happens... I'm about to go back with Time Machine, I'll tell you the results.

Solution to Fix Volume Keys not Working

Try going to your system preferences. Go to "keyboard" and make sure the button at the top is clicked on "keyboard" not keyboard shortcuts. Then uncheck the box that says "use the function keys as standard function keys.

I had the same problem with my friend's macbook pro.

Moltar's solution worked like a charm.

I'm having the same issue, and unchecking the box to use Fn keys as standard keys didn't solve the problem for me.

@ChrisMacuser, you don't need to keep posting about this in multiple threads. Let the problem be worked in the thread you started. Otherwise people may get confused about what you've been told and have tried.
