Macbook Pro overheat

................................ OLD: MBP 13" Mid 09 .......... NEW: MBP 13" Mid 12 ..........
my macbook pro overheated it was sitting on the couch it did an auto shutdown would this damage anything or loose files (it has never auto shutdown before)

I don't think one time it would cause damage, but if you did it over and over again, sure. High heat is the enemy of electronics. It will shorten the life of your machine.

Next time put it on a flat surface to allow air flow and heat dissipation.
It shouldn't "overheat" as long as you don't have it on a couch or pillow or other soft surface.
