which apple computer to buy for multi media?

Hi,
I don't know much about apple computers but I need to buy one because I am going to college to study multi-media. So far I know that I will be doing video editing with animation, pictures, music, graphics, etc using the software "Final Cut Pro".

I need to know what kind of processor or what model (laptop) will be enough to this purpose.

Your school should have hardware and software requirements listed on its site or in any literature they sent to you.
Look there to find out exactly what you'll need.

Well, I wouldn't trust a sales staff to tell me what my school requires either.
If you haven't received anything from the school yet, check out their website for hardware requirements.
Every school has a page for this somewhere.
You could also give them a call or shoot them an email for more detailed info.

As far as what exactly you should buy it really depends on you, but I can tell you what I currently have under the hood. I am running a 2.8 ghz 15.4 inch macbook pro mid 2009 with the 9400 and 9600 graphics cards, and have FCP running smoothly on my system. If you can afford it go with the 17 inch screen, however for me I needed the portability that the 15.4 brings with it.

If you don't like lugging around a 17" screen, why would u advise someone else 2 get 1? That is just like telling him yeah it's ok for u 2 go jump off that bridge, but personally it's not for me.

I would say go with the mbp me personally I like the 13" screen cuz I can see just fine on it. If it is going 2 be your everyday carry around laptop which it is cuz u said it's for school never go with a 17" screen. You will like it at first but then u will get tired of toting that thing around. If i were u I would go 2 any store that has the 13" and 15" and see which one u like the best as far as size cuz if u can do just fine with the 13" that will save u some money.

The choice on what computer to buy really doesn't depend on what the OP wants or what we think might be best, but it depends on what he needs for school.


We still don't know what school you're attending, what courses you'll be taking and we still have no idea what your school's hardware and software requirements are other than you'll likely be using FCP.

Nobody here can give you any definitive answers or recommendations until that information has been provided.

Once we know what the basic requirements for you school are, only then can we offer any real assistance.

Let me start off by saying that I was comparing the 13" and the 15" in size. U stated for him 2 just get the 17" if he can afford it, I stated the disadvantage of carrying around a 17" u didn't. So if u were implying that he needed 2 go in and compare them then u should've stated that. U gave a partial statement that some could have looked at as misleading.

Now on to the rest...

For you 2 think that the 13" can't run FCP is obsurd. I have the 2008 white macbook which is "outdated" compared 2 the new mbp's and I run FCP, Adobe Premiere, and After Effects, and Photoshop. So if the 2008 models can run them flawlessly why couldn't the newer ones? I was running fcp on my 2006 macbook (the very first model didn't even have a dvd burner) as well as on my powerbook g4 and I can't even tell u how old that machine is. So please do not tell this guy misleading information. Any of the newer macs can run any of the programs that he will need without a hiccup. Especially if he get's at least 2 gigs of ram which I think they all come with.
