Good choice and decision and good suggestions I'd say and agree - stay with Mojave:

This is a pretty good article on the topic, not discounting the others posted already,

I'm sure I came across a similar article, but it also included the terminal command or something extra to prevent the red update reminder Tab from returning, but damned if I can find the specific article again. So I pass the search torch to someone else who can.

ie:
The red badge will return, however, every time macOS checks for updates. Opening the Software Update preference can trigger that check, which then causes the badge to reappear!

Warning.....

That's bad advice from Macworld Mag. I'm surprised they would promote it.

Their method kills all updates including the ones that you need for apps that were purchased from the Mac App store. The only thing that's required is the initial terminal command that I already gave to the OP. That only stops Catalina, nothing else.

And... the removal of the badge (small "1") method they gave only works until you reboot or access the Mac App Store, and then it reappears.

The article does warn that you will need to check for security and application updates manually.

That's a hassle and not really necessary when it's very easy to just stop the Catalina update notification. Ever since Macworld Mag went digital and no longer provides a paper copy, they have gone downhill. I let my subscription expire some time ago and have not missed anything. Mac|Life Mag is a much better choice in my opinion.

I used to be a regular reader of MacWorld. Cover to cover every month. Shortly before they went digital I had pretty much stopped reading it every month. In short, as more and more Mac info became available on the internet I relied less and less on MacWorld.

I do miss MacAddict magazine though.

there was a right click on the update icon in the app store to ignore, or skip with Sierra- try that with Catalina.
i thought Mojave was the second most responsive OSX next to Snow leopard.
