You are getting that message on your Mid 2007 20" iMac?

Hard to know isn't it??? Sort of like trying to follow a video presentation wearing a blindfold ...

When you try the external optical drive, what button(s) are you holding down to boot from the optical drive? C forces boot from optical drive, or option displays all bootable disks/discs.

What makes you think your DVD is damaged?

Is it scratched or physically damaged?

It can happen, and I have encountered a goofy CD/DVD OS X Install disk with a virgin copy Apple had shipped that would not work. Looked pristine, but a different Retail disk worked fine in the same iMac.

I have now ordered a replacement superdrive.

I have tried the OSX 10.6 in my 2011 iMac and it boots from the USB and the DVD so its odd.

im going to replace the hard drive I have put in there and see if it helps

but a superdrive replacement will help also.
