iMac RAM

Hi everyone

I ordered my iMac with 8GB (2x4GB) of RAM, but took the early opportunity to buy some more Crucial RAM.

I ordered another 8GB, thinking I'd ordered 2x4GB sticks, but when it arrived today it was just the one 8GB stick.

Anyway, I've popped it in and the machine recognises it just fine.

My query is though, is it OK using RAM in this configuration (i.e. 2x4gb, 1x8gb and 1x empty slot)?

Will ordering another 8GB stick, giving me 24GB in total, be a viable option, or should I return the RAM and get 2x4GB sticks?

Yes, you can use 2 8GB sticks to get up to 24GB. You do not need to use match pairs anymore.

Your award is in the mail, keep an eye out for it!

I think getting that single 8gig stick of RAM was the way to go. This way if you ever decide to fill all RAM slots with 8gig sticks...you'll end up with a total of 32gig...and less 4gig RAM sticks removed (and less money invested in 4gig sticks of RAM).

I ordered 2 x 4GB modules from OWC for my iMac which gave me a total of 16GB. That's more than enough for my usage. You should be fine with 24GB for years to come.

And like has already been stated.... congrats on your 1000th Post and for being a member of our forums for 12 years.

thanks guys - that's good to know. I think I'l get another 8gb stick in the near future. I got mine (Crucial) for just under £60. I used their RAM in my old iMac and never had an issue with it.

I did that basic thing on my 2010 i7 iMac. I first added 2x8 then got another 8 then finally one last 8 for 32 GB. I ran a memory speed tester each time and with all 4 modules installed the speed was faster indicating Dual Channel Ram.

I agree with Nick that going with 8GB modules is the way to go especially for the future!

I have a question. iMac Late 2015, 27 inch: I have 2 8GB sticks in now = 16GB. Do they have to be installed in pairs? Can I just put one more 8GB stick in for 24GB?

mine (late 2017) is working fine with 3 sticks of RAM, so my guess is your's would be just fine as well
