The enlarged pointer state is certainly very short lived and requires quite a violent mouse shake to get it to enlarge. Patrick ===

Trying to keep it seemly, yes, the enlarged pointer doesn't stay big for long (El Capitan). I'm using a Rapoo w'less mouse, and the enlargement under discussion lasts only a second or two, in fact it's quite hard to notice it on this MF page. Is one s'posed to hold the L mouse button, or similar, to retain it?

No, just keep shaking it. When you stop, it goes back to the default size. That said, if that's too small, in System Preferences>Accessibility>Display you can move the slider on Cursor size to the Large end and the default will get bigger.
